Advantages: 3G features, inc. video calling, MP3 player, bluetooth, Expandable, stylish

Disadvantages: probably size, Weight

It's that time again when sony ericsson announce the release of a new flagship model. The Z1010 is an ultimate phone. The phone is not yet available, but should be with us within the next 2 months or so.

First of all, it is a 3G phone. It has the capability of video calling, fast data, video streaming, etc. It is a video player, and an MP3 player. The internal memory is 32MB, but you can expand by Sony's Memory Stick Duo, which currently go up to 256MB, which is plenty.

It is a flip phone, with 2 displays. A main, very high resolution in 65k colours inside, and a monochrome outside. The camera takes pictures of VGA quality, and there is also a video recorder. Though not a small phone, it is still very pocketable and weighs in at 144grams, which is quite a lot for current phones. However, for a 3G phone, it is very compact indeed. Improved bluetooth means now 20m range instead of 10m. This is good for bluetooth headset or car kit users, as it is now nearly immpossible to lose the connection. MP3 files can be used as ring tones, and they can also be played aloud by the built in speaker, or you could, of course, use the headset. 72 voice polyphonics shoud make the polyphonic ringtones sound life like, the maximum at the moment, i think, is 40 voices from phones from samsung, and 32 from the rest of the SE range. The 'normal' nokias, such as 7210, 7250, 3510 etc etc are all 4 voice, and sound extremely poor. (I know because I currently have a 7250i), and feel embaressed when i take a call.

Also, all the usual features such as MMS, SMS, big phonebook are all there. You can also make normal voice phone calls, believe it or not!!! I'm sure sony ericsson will put some fun games on as normal, and sure that you can also download other java games.

The phone should also be available in siver, as well as the red, and in my opinion, i think the silver looks better, and more discreet.

All in al

l, a very clever package, in a stylish, 'flip' style phone. Can't wait to get my hands on one. Was lloking at the Nokia 7600, but I want the SE and after waiting soooooooo long for it, but now its nearly here, I think i can wait that little bit more!

*****EDIT*****
OK, this phone will nver be available from 3 now, although Orange are due to release it before christmas. It is now quite outdated, especially by the Sony Ericsson V800 also expected before christmas on Vodafone only at launch. The V800 is far superior in every aspect.

Great review. Was thinking about this phone but have had bad experiences with SE in the past (Z600-big mistake). I think I'll probably wait for Nokia to come up with something, but I'll definitely give it another look!!

I like this phone. But the red looks ugly. Great review
