If you aren't interested in the Apple family then Sony isn't a bad choice, the Xperia phone is incredible yes like all phone it has its up and down moments but it's a good buy.
Sony are a perfect underdog to Apple, the phone is stylish, pretty light, easy to use and its attractive in design.

In my personal opinion the phone is perfect for every day use, internet browsing and the usual things people like to do on a smart phone. The phone comes in 3 colours all with a metallic sort of feel to them.
This was the first smart phone I properly owned, I do not have anything bad to say about it except it fell down the toilet due to my own fault once and it struggled to work for a few days. The trick to that was put it in a bag of rice in an airing cupboard and then it worked! The Sony phone is stylish, quick to use and fully functional.
It contains all the apps that you require with a hefty memory to hold everything that you need. The processor speed is outstanding and the phone is compatible with HDMI ports, allowing footage from the phone to be played to the tv.
The pro's of the Sony Xperia S do manage to outweigh the con's on this outstanding phone handset and because the phone was released a few years ago the price for the phone will have dropped by a large amount.
On average for the PAYG contract would be anywhere between £100-250 for the handset or a contract would be even cheaper. The phone is quick, offers all the apps that you can possibly think of due to an updated android app store.
As the phone has a large internal memory capacity it will allow you to download all the music, apps, films, tv programmes and everything else you require to practically hold your life on your secured phone in your pockets.
-Cheap to buy or on contract
This phone is worth a buy for anyone after a smart phone and who isn't bothered about the Apple products. Its got a fabulous memory, it is great to use and a perfect size.
Had this phone for little over 7 months now and find that it provides everything I need. It's 1.5GHz dual core processor can cope with most tasks and games, but will sometimes struggle with intense multi-tasking.
The 12mp camera is of good quality and have used it often. The front facing camera is adequate for taking a few selfies, but can lack quality and be pix-elated in dim conditions.
The battery will in general last about a day, but it can be useful to carry a spare rechargeable one as it will run out sometimes.
The screen quality is amazing, and with the back light there are no issues in bright daylight. THe size is also perfect for my needs, not too big or small. The HDMI out port is also very useful, allowing films and pictures to be played on a large screen, again with amazing quality. If watching a movie through this the quality is also good.
In general a good phone, that is comfortable to hold and relatively powerful.
I had been searching for the perfect mobile phone fore ever, something that is the perfect combination of style, practicality and usefulness. I finally decided to try the Sony experia S.This phone was first suggested to me by a phone consultant in an O2 shop. After hearing other phone consultants going on and on about the Iphone and Samsung galaxy, I was very intrigued by this new phone, as I don't like to buy or keep what everyone else has. So I bought this phone on the consultant's recommendation, just on a whim and boy was I surprised when I actually used it a realized what a fantastic phone this is.
The phone comes in a gorgeous box with a picture of the phone and the basic specifications on it. It was available in black and white colours and I bought the white one. When you take the mobile out of the box the first thing you notice is how smart and gorgeous the shape of the mobile is. It is very squared from the front and slightly curved from the back. It has both front and back camera. There is also a led light at the back. The screen is 4.3 inches so it is simply huge. There is a stylish transparent strip that runs at the bottom of the phone after the screen. The phone looks very stylish and up beat.
When I turned the phone on I was amazed by the clarity of the screen and the very neat and uncluttered look of the icons and interface. I found it very easy to navigate on the phone and scroll and open different apps and icons. I also noticed how the shape of the phone made it easy to hold the phone in my hand and type as well.
ITEMS IN THE BOX:
The box included
One Sony xperia S phone
One adapter for charging
One earphone set
One Usb/charging cable
I have been using this phone for more than four month now and have noticed a lot of amazing features in it.
1. First of all the screen size is 4.3 inches, which is great for watching videos or surfing the internet. I really am happy with how huge the screen is.
2. The screen is HD and that makes it amazingly clear. It is really comment able, how clear the screen is. It almost makes it 3D.I find this superb, while using the phone and especially while watching videos on the phone. The pages are very easy to navigate and interface is simple and clutter free. You can customise the screen to fit all your needs.
3. The touch of the phone is fantastic and very easy to use.
4. The camera of the phone is 12 MP and it has a led flash which is brilliant for talking pictures in any light.
5. There is also a front camera. This although is not as good as the back camera, but does come in handy while video chatting on the internet and taking my own pictures. I use the front camera, very conveniently for skype chatting with my family.
6. A really good feature for people who love taking pictures all the time like me is the photo button on the side of the phone. This allows me to turn the camera on without having to unlock my phone or actually touch icon for the camera. I can just simply turn the camera on directly from this button and start taking pictures quickly.
7. The phone comes with a huge 32 GB memory.
8. The phone is android and you just need a Google account to download any app you want from it. I find android much better that Apple Ios, as it has a larger choice of applications and a lot of these applications are free to download and use.
9. There is an additional tab or icon on top of the screen which I drag down and it has all the hot buttons for wifi, sound, phone internet etc. It also controls the notifications of the phone.
10. The phone has wifi, Bluetooth and is perfect for internet surfing. Skype, Facebook, Twitter, Wattsapp, Viber etc run perfectly on it. I use the phone more for browsing and using the internet rather than texting or calling.
11. The icons can be customised and moved around according to my comfort and choice.
12.This phone is brilliant for downloading, storing and listening to music.
Although this is a brilliant phone, but after using it for a while I have come across a few of it's disadvantages as well.
1. Firstly it feels like I am always charging my phone. I am not sure if it is because my Wifi is on all the time and I use the phone throughout the day. Since I am at home most of the time this is just a minor inconvenience for me, but it might be a bit of an annoyance for some one who uses the phone out of the home a lot.
2. The camera is 12 Mp which sounds brilliant, but I am not 100% satisfied by its results. I find that it works perfectly outdoors and in day light. But indoors the pictures don't come out as good as some other phones I have used. You need to keep the camera very still to get the best pictures. So it is almost impossible to take pictures of moving objects esp children.
3. The phone does not have a memory card slot. Although it has a 32 Gb memory but sometimes I wished it also had a card slot so that I could transfer data from other devices to the phone via that. This proved to be a major inconvenience when I first got the phone as I just wanted to transfer all my data from my previous phone to this phone simply via the memory card and could not so.
Despite some minor problems I feel that the advantages of the phone surpass the disadvantages by far and this is one of the best and useful I have ever had. I find the phone stylish, practical and it fits most of my needs.
I was really excited about getting this phone, it was my first smart phone, but within days I had dropped it on the floor and the screen had smashed!Luckily I had warranty through my bank account and after them trying to repair it twice, they sent me a brand new phone.I decided to buy a case with a wrist strap for the phone, so that I could carry the phone on my arm without dropping it again.Since then I have had no problems with it, it is easy to use, the photos are as crisp and as my camera. It does need charging more than my previous phone, but that's probably because it has a lot more functions.I like the way that the notifications bar informs you that a text has been received and you can pull it down to view the text.
I am not hugely technical, so when reviewing my phone I will be talking about the features I use and what I get from them with my personal opinions.
In terms of phones, I am normally one to keep trying and keep buying until I find one I can settle with. I have had this xperia s now for coming up 9 months, and it still feels new to me. I don't mean that in a bad way, I am still finding new things on my phone and learning more about it. So far, it has been fine for me, and a definite upgrade compared to my old phone the ZTE Grand X!.
I have this phone in the white version, and to be honest it was the colour which sold me more than anything, and the large screen. I always go for screen size when buying a new phone, as all I ever tend to use my phone for is playing games and looking on the internet. I have only recently started to use my phone for music for the gym, and I am not one to text or make calls very much.
I got my handset from the phones 4 u store, and as far as I know, they are the only ones who sell the white version of this phone.
This phone is H128, W64, D10.6mm and with a slim design I find the phone fits easily in my hand and is very easy to use with one hand. With a weight of 144g, it's not very heavy yet doesn't feel very light and flimsy.
The prices may have changed from my purchase 9 months ago, and as my purchase was a quick buy after I had enough of the issues with my old phone, I can not remember the exact price I paid. It was around £270 which I paid, which at the time was fantastic considering the others on offer at a much higher price with matching performance.
The current prices for this phone are-
Argos- Black £279.95
Sony Website- Both colours, £249
***The phone overall***
I have been very pleased with the overall performance of this phone, i find it very easy to make calls and send texts. This phone has the swype option for texting which I absolutely love as my old samsung phone has this feature, it makes texting much quicker and easier. I found it very easy to figure out how to make calls and texts the quick way, which can be done straight from the address box or through quick links which can be personalised onto the home screen.
The phone does not scratch easily, however I have always used a screen cover on mine for extra protection. The phone is a lovely soft matt white and although I usually use either a leather flip case or back case, when used alone I don't find the phone picks u dirt easily and it fits into my hand nicely.
I have dropped this phone a few times- everyone makes mistakes! However luckily for me, it doesn't scratch or chip easily and mine is still in fantastic condition.
The phone also has a front facing camera, which although isn't as good as the normal camera, it comes in handy for video calling or taking pictures of yourself- not that i do that a lot!
The screen is a 4.3inch clear full HD touchscreen, which proves great for watching trailers, using youtube or playing games. I don't tend to watch movies on my handset, as I have a laptop and tablet for that! Although I do get many hours of playing candy crush on this phone!
I have no complaints regarding the speed of this phone, as it is a quad band with 32gb internal memory, I find it nippy and very reliable, even when I have multiple apps running.
The phone does have a HDMI slot which allows you to view your videos and pictures on your TV- this is great entertainment for the kids, especially when you set it up onto video mode and see their faces as they walk past and see themselves on TV!
I take a lot of photos on my phone, and it has been very reliable so far. As I packed away all of my items, including my camera for moving, I have used this phone a lot over the past few months for very special days and events, and have got some lovely photos from it. The camera does have a flash which is a huge plus, as I had a phone without a flash in the past so I am all too aware of the limitations you can face from that.
This phone has a fantastic 12 mega pixel camera, which is even better than my kodak camera! The shutter speed is pretty good too, which means I can easily catch perfect pictures. When photographing in movement however, it can be tricky to get decent pictures, especially when taking pictures of my nephew and neice, I often have to take a dozen photos to be able to pick out a clear one, although I am happy with the quality of the pictures as a phone camera.
The camera has the ability of up to 16x zoom, meaning I am able to capture lovely sights when out on walks. The quality of the picture does drop when using zoom, however it is still handy to have.
With full HD 1080p recording, I love being able to take great quality pictures and watch them back, seeing the full quality of the picture.
Overall, the quality of the camera and video recording is fantastic for this phone, and is a great selling point.
I use the internet a lot on my phone, and I find the service plan you are on and the phone provider you are with has a large impact on the quality of internet usage. I am currently having problems with the 3G signals from orange, so I am mainly relying on wifi at the moment. I know this is a problem with my service provider, as my 3G worked fine when I first got it, it is only recently that I have moved and noticed the problem.
You can open many windows at once when on the internet, which is useful for comparing products when buying and shopping around. The internet can be reached from the google link on the home screen, although this can be personalise and removed.
When leaving the internet, holding the home button brings up all the open apps and allows me to close everything I am not using which helps avoid lagging, however this doesn't close the windows I have open within the browser and occasionally it will tell me to close some windows as I have reached my max- although this is easy to do.
If you have a an account with google mail, you can log in using your account name and get the play application which allows you to download apps, games or music etc. I personally prefer the play store to the usual android store as I find it easier to use. If you have used the play store on a previous phone, they will all be saved on the play application and you can easily select them from this list to reinstall them onto your new phone.
This phone does have wifi and bluetooth, as most phones do nowadays. However I find it important to also mention the bluetooth on this phone works fine and is very easy to use, as I have found with many other phones previously bluetooth can be a pain to get working right. There is an option on this phone to alter the length of visibility time when using bluetooth, and I have always found it easy to set up and send photos and receive photos across.
This phone DOES NOT have the option to use an external micro sim, which really annoyed me when I first got it, as I had a 8gb micro card saved with all of my images and music ready to put into my new phone. So please note if you are wanting to buy this phone, you will need to transfer the data onto a laptop or something and then connect your phone to your laptop, this will be an easier way of transferring it over.
Having said this, this phone does come with a fantastic 1gb Ram and 32gb of internal memory! I have downloaded loads of music, taken hundreds of photos and installed loads of applications and so far my phone has not slowed down or had a problem with saving anything.
I always find the battery life a very important part of reviewing phones, as a crappy battery life can really have impact on the enjoyment you get out of your handset.
As I currently use mine for a heavy ammount of gaming- being addicted to candy crush, I tend to charge my phone every night. However this is just as a convenience and habit of mine, as I do find most nights my battery is still on over 50% even after about an hour of gaming and light internet and txts.
The internet doesn't tend to drain my battery, in fact I only ever notice my battery life running down when I am playing games for an extended amount of time. In the evenings, I usually spend around 45 minutes on my games, which can take my battery down by around 20% on average, which isn't too bad as I am at home and able to recharge it, but for this reason I avoid playing games whilst at work or early on in the day to avoid any battery issues.
Having said all of this, considering my previous experience with phones, I am pretty pleased with the battery life and have no complaints.
Overall, I am pretty pleased with my phone, I have not got bored of it so far which is quite good for me! I really enjoy using this phone, I find the camera great, the phone very nippy, the screen size perfect for what I want to use it for, and the design is lovely. I have never had any problems in terms of this phone crashing or being unresponsive, so I have no complaints!
I would recommend this phone, however it is being discontinued in many stores including phones 4 u, which is a shame! I have never been dragged into the craze of iphones, and I will never be embarrassed to show off my 'old range' Xperia S!
Thank you for reading, I also post on Ciao.
Thought i'd try a Sony and I wasnt dissapointed.
A brilliant 4.3 inch screen allows easy browsing on sites, a lot better than other phones. The images are crisp and all writing looks neat which shows just how high a resolution this is. When playing 3D games the graphics again are brilliant and realistic.
Taking pictures on this is brilliant, the 12mp camera really does make pictures look very sharp on the screen, and even better when on the computer which allows you to blow them up and the pictures still arent very pixel-elated.
Quick and easy data swapper from your phone to your computer just plug in the USB and the rest is self explanatory and a quick drag and drop process. The menu on the phone is simple and easy to use, and also allows different ideas for you to customize it yourself.
To get the best out of your battery you must charge it fully up then let it run down, otherwise it comes across as being a poor battery. But overall the battery life is good, apart from when you spend a long time playing 3D games as it drains so quickly then!
The fact that it's an adroid allows you to access lots of apps which is very useful, as there really is an app for everything. The fact that it has a slight curve in the back allows a better hold and feel of the phone, especially when texting 1 handed.
After my previous phone broke I decided I should treat myself with a large and flashy smartphone.
While looking around the web and in shops I found that the Sony Xperia S is a the best phone for me, as it has a large full HD 4.3 inch screen, a good processor and a great 12.1 mega pixel camera.
The screen is an absolute treat as text is sharp and colours are vibrant. With a 4.3 inch screen I found web browsing extremely easy and stress free.
I really like the design as the curved back gives a sense of comfort while holding the device both diagonally and vertically. I chose the black version as it looks more professional and low profile than the white one (in my opinion). The lighting strip at the bottom is a great little feature that gives the phone a bit more detail but I find it slightly irritating at times.
The over all performance is great when I am browsing the web and playing smaller games but there is are very rare blocking/stalling of bigger/more demanding games. Most of the time I don't experience any problems with the processing speed.
The battery life is OK on most days when I only check a few things such as the weather and play small games, but when I play larger (3D) games during the day the battery drains quite quickly. For average use the battery life is absolutely fine.
Got this phone on a free upgrade. Previously had an iPhone 4 (which there was nothing wrong with i just fancied a change). The Xperia is good, very easy to use and does everything you'd expect from a smart phone. Initial when set up the battery was poor but once i'd given it a full charge and configured the phone correctly it lasts about as long as the iPhone did (obviously depending on useage). Adding media and getting as pictures is very straight forward just 'drag and drop'
I have had many Sony phones in the past, of course these usually came under the Sony Ericsson brand. My old SE X10 mini pro contract had expired so naturally I was drawn to the new Sony flagship phone since its breakaway from Ericsson.
Initially the size in comparison to my old mini pro was considerable but the phone fits just fine in the pocket and is easy to hold and use with one hand. It has a stunning 4.3-inch HD screen which is fantastic for watching movies or playing games.
It came with the Android Gingerbread operating system but this quickly upgraded to ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich). I find the phone very quick and even after owning for a few months still performs multi tasking perfectly for my own needs.
Those who love taking pictures on their phone will not be disappointed, the Xperia S has a 12.1-megapixel camera built in which offers 3d and panoramic features.
Gamers will be drawn to the built in playstation feature, I however found this quite underwhelming, the choice of titles available are low to say the least. Gaming in general on the device is stunning however, I have been able to download a number of well known console quality games which have played almost flawlessly.
Battery drain is a problem, but I think this is a smartphone issue in general, I on average have to charge most days or every 36 hours. The charge varies depending obviously on how much you use the phone a day and of course for what reasons, games and video streaming are the worse culprits.
Memory space is 32GB, fine for most but people who look to store high quality movies and games may well find the space limited over time. Personally I have found it adequate with a number of large games and films/music present. The downside is no SD card slot for additional storage, not really sure why this is.
Overall amazing phone. The touch screen is not as sensitive as the iphone which could be good or bad depending on what your used to and how big your hands are too. Awesome camera I never take a camera out with me anymore because it is so good and good to print as well as just having on the phone. Lovely big screen, covers most of the phone rather than having thick edges and a small screen in the middle. The thing I loved most about this phone is the fact that you can go to a contact in your phone and see the last text message conversion. nice and sleek, quite durable too. I have droped it a few times and don't even have a scratch on it. Free on most contracts so it's can't be too expensive. probably the best phone i've had. I would recommend to anyone.
This phone is awesome. The screen is amazing, and I haven't even peeled off the screen protector that makes it look matte. Camera looks good. Feels solid. Loud speakers. The battery is the only problem, have to charge at the end of the day but it lasts pretty well for me unless you spend the whole day downloading apps. For some reason the phone turns off overnight when I wake up the battery is dead. I think I need to turn off WiFi when I go to sleep because WiFi uses about 11% of the battery. Overall, best phone I've ever used.
Over all it is a very good android phone with a wide and high resolution display that I have ever seen in the phone market. The dual core fast enough to support the daily usage of the phone without any lag.. I love mine very much.. Hope it gets all the name and fame.. It has awesome screen and the spped is very good in responding to everything it has.. Got an awesome camera..
I've just upgraded my phone to a Sony Xperia S and I'm very happy with it. It was a little more than I wanted to pay per month but I changed the data usage I got and now I have a great deal. This is my first smart phone and I dont know how I'll live without one again.
When I first opened the box I thought wow thats a big phone, much bigger than my previous one and bigger than my ipod touch! Phones started getting smaller and smaller and now getting bigger and bigger! now I'm used to it the screen size is good for using internet and now i've got used to it, it doesn't seem to big!
I love the white bar on the bottom and between that and the phone is a transparent bit which is pretty cool. There are 3 buttons on this row which are the back button, home and menu button which are all touch sensitive.
The battery life is pretty good, but of course the more you use it the more you need to charge it, I find I need to charge it either everyday or every other day but is quick to charge.
The only downside is that you cannot remove the battery. So if for some reason I ever experience a phone freeze and before with old phones I just removed the battery and then restarted it. If this does happen I will have to wait for the battery to run down. The back of the phone is also quite difficult to remove.
One of the best screens I've seen on a phone!!With its mobile Bravia engine in the screen, Sony have chucked millions of pixels in the phones and it's created a truly astonishing phone.Speakers are excellent and clear. Very recommended phone.
I've recently upgraded to the Xperia S from an Xperia Pro 10, so I don't really have a great deal of experience of smart phones, but I thought I would share some preliminary views on this phone from someone who's coming to smart phones with no preconceptions or initial comparisons. I think I would say that I'm something of a Sony Ericsson loyalist, and the bulk of my experience of mobile use is via the Android system.
This is a sizeable phone: I've got medium-sized male hands and it fits comfortably, but it is quite substantial. It provides a great screen for videos and gaming.
The design is very pleasing, with some sharp edges, and a transparent row of illuminated icons that Mark the bottom of the phone. These provide the go back, home and menu functions, and do so with touch sensitive points that are easy to use.
My overall impression is of a phone with some serious power behind it, and that's marketing itself almost a something of a palmtop computer rather than a phone. I have a little experience of iPhones owned by friends, and this must be a serious contender to their crown.
