Advantages: Protects screen from scratches.
Disadvantages: Leaves bubbles under film. Images dulled. Expensive.
I had an iPad for my birthday on on the day the iPad was released.......and I have to admit that I love it! Obviously as the iPad is a touchscreen and because one of the things I love about the iPad is the screen itself, I decided to buy a screen protector for added piece of mind. I was really surprised to see that Apple do not do a screen protector for the IPad and when I enquirer at The Apple Store, I was told that this was because Apple do not believe a screen protector is necessary for this product since its quality is so high that it would not be prone to being scratched anyway. However, nevertheless I still wanted one and so I looked elsewhere.
I found the Belkin version of their iPad screen protector on Amazon for £13.95. this did seem fairly expensive to me for what is essentially a piece of plastic film - but I am generally impressed with Belkin products and so I decided to go for it.
The box contained a plastic film screen protector, a cardboard applicator to help smooth the film onto the screen, and a lint-free cleaning wipe to clean the screen before applying the film. Instructions came in the box and were clear and straightforward......how hard can attaching a film to a screen be, right?
Well........as it turned out, it was a lot harder than it looked!
I cleaned the screen with the wipe, as instructed. That was easy! But then the fun started. In theory, its supposed to be easy to attach the film. Basically, I peeled a little fit away from one of the corners so that some of the adhesive side was exposed and then I carefully matched up the corner or the film with the corner of my iPad screen and then slowly, with the aid of the cardboard smoothing applicator, pressed down gently on the film as I was laying it to remove any bubbles. Once in place I the peeled off the top protective layer to reveal a beautifully protected screen.........NOT!
Under the film protector were more bubbles than you would find in an Aero! The bubbles were trapped and although I tried to smooth them out, the would not shift. It made my once beautiful screen looked tatty and ugly and I had to resist the temptation to rip it off immediately!
Although the iPad touch screen was as responsive with the film as without it, I didn't like the feel of the film itself. My iPad screen is silky, shiny and glossy to the touch, whereas the film felt like it had more of a matt finish - which felt unsexy! I also felt like the vividness of the colours and the quality of the images on the iPad were somewhat dulled by the film protector and I didn't like that one little bit!
So.....about an hour after putting the film on, I decided to take it off again and put it where it properly belonged.......in the bin!
I was very disappointed in this product, especially as I believe the Belkin range is generally of very high quality, but this protector film is just not up to scratch. I couldn't recommend it to anyone.
Summary: Don't bother!
