Advantages: Nice display model
Disadvantages: Rubbish paints included
The Airfix 1:72 scale Battle of Britain memorial flight kit was released to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the organisation in 2007. Containing three kits, the modeller can build scale models of three of the RAF's most famous planes, the Avro Lancaster B mkI bomber, the Hawker Hurricane MkIIk and of course the Supermarine Spitfire Mk IIa.
The kit has a rating of three. Now Airfix rank there models with difficulty levels ranging from 1 for easy up to 4 for the most challenging. While the Hurricane and Spitfire are relatively uncomplicated, it is the Lancaster that gains this set a higher than usual rating.
Included in the box is every material you will need including glue, paint brush and paint so it really does make a complete gift. However, my experience with this set and others like it is that you are better off buying your own paint. The ones supplied come in tiny plastic pots that are usually unsealable once opened.
Obviously with this being related to a specific set of planes there are no alternate decals for different versions of the planes, so what you see is what you get, however finding after market decals for other versions is not difficult.
The kit retails at about £25 which is not bad considering if you buy the three kits seperate, then the glue and brushes it will end up costing closer to 340, so a bit of a saving there.
For display purposes, the kit comes with a unique triple pronged stand which is unsual for Airfix aircraft models as they usually forced to stand on their own two feet!!! Perhaps one of the nicest surprises is the detail on the Lancaster, certainly more than i'd come to expect on an Airfix kit. As such, with a couple of after market detailing sets you can make a kit that will take pride of place in any display. Of course wou will need about 300mm x 430mm of space and about £25 to purchase but it's worth it as a present for yourself or loved one.
