      Very helpful

A missed opportunity for a truly great kit

Now I have to admit that I bought this kit a couple of weeks ago. One reason was to review to Dooyoo whilst adding another kit to my collection of 1/72 helicopter models. To my knowledge there are two company's kits of the Merlin available, Revell and Italeri. Now on previous experience I would have opted for the Revell having previously beena satisfied customer in addition to hearing bad things about Italeri kits requiring a lot of additional work.

Opening the box I found the kit attached tp three sprues moulded in light gray plastic and a clear sprue containing windows. I am happy to note that there was no flash whatsoever which is always nice. Also included of course are the instructions and decals for the Royal Navy version.

Externally, the detail is very good with the bumps and antennae of the sensors all being faithfully reproduced. Internally however, Italeri live up to their reputation. The cockpit may have a faithful reproduction of the seats and centre console but no rudder control pedals or overhead console have been included meaning you'll need to purchase an after market kit or make your own. It really is a bit shabby to just omit bits of the aircraft as essentially they are out of sight, out of mind.

You can complete this kit in either the ready for flight version or as stowed with the tail collapsed and the main rotor blade swept back.

Once completed it is a fairly nice kit but again those lingering issue with Italeri are disappointing. Trawling the web for reference, it appears later versions of the kit are a vast improvement, but the Revell Kit still has the edge with the decals it provides. It will not take too much effort if you are happy to follow the instructions and use the parts provided, and the end results are good enough.
