      really good value for money

We bought this rather snazzy little dongle to take away with us when we travel to see family. My husband is from Lincolnshire (we're in the West Mids) so we wanted to be able to take out laptop with us when we visited family and to be able to get on the internet. We picked up this dongle from our local three store and had it up and running within ten minutes of getting home. Three seemed to be about the best value provider as it offered 3gb of internet for the same price as O2/vodaphone's 2gb of internet. These were the package prices when we picked up our dongle.

£29.99 with 1GB of data valid for 1 month
£39.99 with 3GB of data valid for 3 months
£89.99 with 12GB of data valid for 12 months

The dongle itself had a nice sleek modern design, it is as small as a memory stick and sits nicely in the pocket of our laptop bag. All the installation files are contained on the device itself so no need to keep hold of the cd or such like. We changed our laptop a few months ago and hadn't needed to use the dongle for a while, so on going away we realised that it wasn't set-up after a few minutes we were back up and running again without any problems. We've also found it really easy to top up, you can purchase a top-up from anywhere that sells standard mobile phone top-ups or even register your credit or debit card with them... simple. The speed is quite good for a mobile device but obviously won't be as fast as your home broadband.

All in all we've found this a fantastic device for getting on the internet when we are away from home, and I'm sure it would also make a brilliant alternative for people who don't want to be tied into a long internet contract. All in all, really good value for money.

Great for Internet on the move with no contract

After some money problems due to both of us losing our jobs when the companies we were working for went bust within 3 months of each other we had to cancel our original TV,phone and broadband contract with Virgin. Thankfully we both found work pretty quickly but neither of us really wanted to sign any 12 month internet or phone contracts until we had time to get back on our feet and pay off some of the money we still owed.

I don't watch TV much so I didn't miss the TV package but I did really miss having internet access so we decided to buy a 3 mobile broadband dongle so we could get back online without being tied to a contract. Our main reason for choosing 3 as the provider was for £15 you get 3GB compared to Vodaphone or O2s 2GB or T Mobile which although unlimited it operates a fair use policy which equates to an allowance of 1GB per month so they may restrict your use if you constantly go over.

The dongle can be bought from any mobile phone shop, the 3 Mobile shop and supermarkets such as Tesco and Asda also sell them. The dongle comes with ready loaded data depending on which one you buy when we bought ours the options were..

£29.99 with 1GB of data valid for 1 month
£39.99 with 3GB of data valid for 3 months
£89.99 with 12GB of data valid for 12 months

There is now the option to buy a premium dongle which is faster sadly this option wasn't available when we purchased ours as I probably would have bought it as it only costs £10 more.

In the box you get the dongle, a sim card, USB cable and a start up guide. The dongle is a black plastic USB stick with a space to insert the sim card and also a mini SD card slot so you can use the dongle as a storage device as well although it doesn't come with the mini SD card. The dongle is compatible with all versions of Windows from 2000 onwards we have used it on XP,Vista and Windows 7 with no problems.

Setting the dongle up is easy just insert the sim card, plug the dongle in to a USB port and it auto plays and installs itself with only a couple of clicks needed to agree terms and agree installation. This makes it ideal for anyone who is unsure about computers and setting up broadband for the first time.
We bought a 3 dongle for an uncle who had been given an old laptop so he could get online and see if he liked using the internet before he committed to a contract. This was the first thing he had ever tried to do on the laptop apart from playing Solitaire and he had no problems setting it up.

One of the things I like about the 3 dongle is you can top it up using a card online or by buying a 3 top up voucher at a shop my friend has the O2 dongle and that can only be topped up using a card which caused problems when he was waiting for a replacement bank card. We have been trying to keep a closer eye on our finances so now take out a set amount of money for shopping and everyday purchases rather than using our cards randomly and losing track of how much we've spent so buying vouchers worked better for us.

The 3 mobile top ups are
£2.99 for 500MB pay per day only available to purchase online
£10 for 1GB valid for 30 days voucher or pay online
£15 for 3GB valid for 30 days voucher or pay online
£25 for 7GB valid for 30 days voucher or pay online

We usually top up £15 which gives us 3GB which usually easily lasts us for a month if we are using the internet for occasional downloads, browsing websites and email. If you spend a lot of time watching videos on Youtube or downloading music the data goes pretty quickly. Depending on the connection speed we find we can't watch some videos on Youtube as the connection isn't always fast enough so the videos will freeze which can be annoying especially if it lets you watch the first minute then stops! The downside of pay as you go broadband is the top ups only last for 30 days so if you don't use the data in that time you lose it we usually download some music or updates in the last couple of days to use up the last of our data.

The broadband connection is not as fast as normal home broadband and if you have been used to superfast broadband you are probably going to be a bit disappointed although it's not as slow as dial up but there are times it certainly seems that way. The suggested maximum theoretical upload speed on this dongle is 3.6 MBPS the newer premium dongle from 3 has a maximum download speed of 21.6 MBPS and upload of 5.76 MBPS. As always these speeds are theoretical and will depend on it being used in the optimum conditions with perfect signal and nobody else on the planet trying to use the network at the same time!

We've had the 3 dongle for around a year now and until recently the connection has been pretty reliable with only occasional disconnections but in the last month or so we have noticed we are getting cut off regularly without warning even though the 3 software is showing a full signal and is still showing that we are connected to the internet. This is usually solved by closing down the 3 software and removing the dongle and starting over again but this sometimes takes several attempts.

At £15 a month this isn't the cheapest option for internetand definitely not the fastest option but it is great if you don't want to be tied to a contract or you want to have internet access on the move. We've finally decided to get another home broadband contract but the dongle will still come in handy for using with the laptop away from home.

      It's great for its price!

I currently have this internet as it's a lot easier than taking a proper contract out.

I pay £15 a month on this little USB stick and i can browse the internet all month (nearly every day) before it needs topping up to last me until the next month.

If you want to pay monthly like me, you can arrange to have it capped. This means that if you don't want any unexpected bills - they'll stop it from loading and send you an email once you've reached your limit.

You can then go and top it up (£5 to £20) at any shop that you could top a phone up at.

It takes about 5-10 minutes to install it onto your computer or laptop, simply by plugging the internet into a USB port. It loads up and installs itself, with the occasional prompt from you.

After it has installed, all you need to do is plug it in and connect whenever you want to use it!

This is great for people like myself on a budget or those who don't use it much but it's a must in their house, i haven't had to top up once yet but i have peace of mind that it's going to tell me when i need to rather than letting me go over it and pay a bigger bill.

The only downside is that it takes a while to load pages sometimes, but it is only a USB internet so it's to be expected.

Great for anyone not wanting a contract quick speeds, qucik installation!

I got this stick after having the first 3 one (white round one) and it jst not working anymore die to being bent on the usb bit.
This one was alot better as no wires. So easy to use -plug in, top up and away you go on the net! Fab! (Installation took about 5 minutes)
I never had any problems with 3 the credit lasted about a month, was cheap for what you got and we use the net alot and the speeds were fine as good as when we were with BT Broadband.
I have to say I recomend these as I am now with T Mobile and have had nothing but problems with them its been a nightmare and unfortunatly Im in a contract now with them but have said I will definetly go straight back with these in the future.
I did have to phone up customer services once when I tried topping up and it didnt work but the lady was fab and helped me and sorted out the [problem. (Again unlike T Mobile!)
Defo recomend these sticks for anyone not wanting a contract.
