Last week I phoned the Halifax for a mortgage quotation after seeing an independant mortgage advisor and coming up with Halifax as the best lender for us. Anyway the woman that I spoke to was very helpful and she insisted on ringing me back so that the call wasn't on my phone bill as it lasted some 25 minutes. As it could all be done on the phone this saved me having to get to the branch with my baby. They came up with a tracker mortgage for us which is set at 0.25% below the Bank of England's rate, which is currently 5.75%. I found this to be very competitive with the other lenders that I had checked out. The mortgage has no tie ins which means no redemption penalties so you are free to change lenders at any time. All in all I found the Halifax to be very helpful and I would recommend them to you.
