Advantages: No penalties

Disadvantages: It's a debt!

I've always had a repayment mortgage. I was lucky enough not to be talked into an endowment mortgage, as I always thought that because as there was no guarantee of the endowment paying off what I owed, it was a bit risky. "Oh no sir, no chance of that".
Better still, I took my repayment mortgage out with the Nationwide. Better because they have remained mutual, and so have had lower interest rates than most of the others, and better still because I have been fortunate enough to pay large sums off of it, with no penalty. I will soon have paid off my mortgage. If I have another, it will be a repayment, and it may well be with the Nationwide, as long as they remain a building society that is.

I agree, treat a mortgage as a huge debt and overpaying by even a small amount can cut your overall paymant by thousands. We have a 47k mortgage and if we can we will overpay by £500 a month. The result -paid off in 4 years instead of 16 !!
Think of the interest saved - very few savings accounts pay more than the equivalent of the mortgage interest - and you can get your extra money back out if finances go belly up.

I'm sorry to give only a SU but you have not given enough information about the Nationwide to make this useful. What you have said is probably applicable to anywhere.

But I noticed that this is only your second opinion - perhaps it would be a good idea if you read a few others to get a feel for it and do check out the tips to writing opinions - put dooyoo in the search box to find the category.
