	Abit KT7E ... AMD K6-2 500Mhz CPU (Central Processing Unit – the “brain” in your PC) I decided to splash out and upgrade to a new CPU as well. Being a student, and the fact I’d just bought a new case and CD-Rewriter, money was not exactly flowing from my wallet (the moths were on forced diet) so I plumped for an entry level CPU and associated motherboard. I eventually chose the Abit KT7E motherboard. I’d had an Abit motherboard before, and was very impressed with the ease at which it handled everything. 	Abit KT7A-RAID ... the KG7 and KG7-RAID came along, this was Abit's top of the range Socket A board. With support for any current Thunderbird processor, 1.5GB of PC133 RAM and up to 8 hard drives, it certainly sounds impressive. Using the KT133A chipset (with the VIA 686b Southbridge) means that the latest Athlon C models can be used, running on a 266MHz DDR bus - especially good news for those with unlocked 200MHz bus CPUs. The 686b has had its fair share of problems, though, with a particularly nasty data corruption bug involving large data transfers over the IDE bus. 	Abit KT7-RAID ... has an enviable reputation, especially amongst the over-clocking community, and the KT7A RAID board has all the features to support this status. This Socket A motherboard can use the Athlon and Duron processors, with up to 1.5GB of memory. Abit has attempted to future-proof this board by using a 3-phase power system; basically a set of six transistors that enable a regulated supply to the CPU of up to 46 Amps. A little over-kill, we feel, but over-engineering never hurt anyone. In common with other boards tested here, this one incorporates the VIA KT133 chipset that supports 133MHz on the system and memory buses. But the main feature that sets this board apart is ...
