This was the first time I have built a computer and as such I was nervous about installing it. The instructions were very clear although some of the black and white pictures were poor. The board is supposed to give error messages through the headphone output, even when the graphics card was not installed I could not get any message to that effect. Once all the components were fitted it booted first time to much relief.
I have built the computer for gaming and with a Radeon 850XT Platinum card the results are superb. It cruises through Far Cry with all the settings on very high. All I need to do now is but a better monitor to benefit.
i bought mine for about £100,this motherboard is great because it has 2 onboard ethernet adaptors,it has sata onboard,it has an Nvidia Nforce2 sound card which delivers exellent 5.1 sound. It is very expandable because it has 5 PCI slots. This motherboard takes AMD athlon proccessors up to the 3200+ range. It has firewire onboard. The memory fits PC3200,2700,2100,1600 DDR,dual memory support for ultra speed. Features:COP (cpu over heating protection),Q-fan technology, powerloss restart,CPU throttle.Ports:parrallel,serial,2x ps/2,audio I/O,2 net adaptors,6x usb ports (4 onboard).the motherboard is ATX 12inch x 9.6inch.setting up the motherboard was very easy as the manual that comes with it covers pretty much everything, there is a support line, which i believe is very helpfull,i have had this motherboard for over a year now and i have found this a great piece of hardware.the 'POST' screen is cool as it tells you a report in the voice of a lady which can be changed!.if you are a linux user, then good for you, because this motherboard is very compatible.i have ran Xandros, knoppix, gnoppix wihout trouble.also i am running windowsXP without any problems.i hope you have learnt a bit from this review,in one word to describe this motherboard - EXCELLENT!.
I purchased this motherboard after having always having cheap motherboards before which I was not happy with. The motherboard is ideal for the latest Athlon Processors including the Barton and the 400Mhz FSB variety. The overclocking ability, especially for the Barton processors is excellent as it automatically unlocks the multiplier and the front side bus to give you maximum control over the CPU and RAM speeds. As this board is an Nforce2 chipset, changing these settings does not affect any other components on the board. The board layout is generally very good but there is quite a few capacitors very close to the CPU socket making it difficult to install a large heatsink which will probably be used when overclocking. This board uses DDR400 / PC3200 RAM for the very best in performance and if you have two identical sticks of RAM, you can run it in a special mode which increases the speed again. If you are using DDR400 / PC3200 you must user certified memory as this could cause problems if it is not used. Six USB 2.0 ports provide fast connection to many devices, dual LAN ports is ideal for connecting to a network and a cable modem at the same time, 2 firewire posts are also (standard and mini sizes) The BIOS gives you excellent control over all the settings and is easy to use. The software included works really well and a PC Probe is used to monitor temperatures and voltages for the whole system. The motherboard does get quite warm so good case ventilation is essential I would definitely buy this motherboard again, especially as it only cost £98 from novatech.co.uk
This was my first purchase of an Asus motherboard, previous motherboards having been Gigabyte or Abit. Firstly lets start with the layout of the board. Overall the layout is good and installation of components onto the board is simple, the RAM slots in particular are very well placed allowing easy access even with an AGP graphics card in place. My only gripe with this motherboard is the slight lack of space around the CPU itself, which limits the installation of a very large heatsink, possibly a detracting factor for potenial overclockers. The board is very well equipped with 3 DIMM slots,5 PCI slots, 4 firewire ports, 6 USB ports and a Serial ATA hard disk controller. It also includes a very high quality Dolby digital 5.1 soundcard built into the motherboard which should elminitate the need to buy an external soundcard for all but the very high-end audio users. In performance terms I've not run any benchmarks but the motherboard performs well and I've had no problems at all with stability. All in all for £115 I can't imagine you'd get a better motherboard especially when this one saves you the cost of an external soundcard. A great buy.
