... they called 'write-back cache'. The term was ambiguous at the time but it was expressed in the terms of a chip that supported the CPU operation and was understood by the industry as a chip that supported CPU microcode-read/write functions. I had an engineer who stripped a sample of their motherboard and who de-soldered one of these 'write-back cache' chips - which I refer to as 'chips'. On inspection it transpired that these chips were made of solid plastic and served no function whatsoever. ...more

Premium Review PCChips 810LMR: Excellent system builder motherboard (244 words)

I've been using PC-Chips for years now and don't know why they keep coming under fire. I've only had about 2 motherboards ever fail and one of those was an, ahem, user induced error. This motherboard is now housing a 2GHz processor, 1 GB of memory and a 120GB hard diskwith DVD burner. And it's running like a little dream. The idea here is that it's everything to evry man (Or woman). Onboard you'll find :- . 10/100 network . 56K Modem . Up to 64 MB TNT-2 Chipset Video shared with system memory . Audio . 2 PCI Slots . 1 AGP Slot . Can take up to 1GB SDRAM The fact that so much comes out of ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review it's cheap it's stable it's ok (337 words)

I bought a PC with this motherboard inside. I had read mixed reviews of it so was slightly concerned. I have now used it daily for several months so have a good idea of its good and bad points. It's useful that it comes with a modem, sound, LAN adapter and graphics on board....however the sound is quite bad...system noise is not suppressed, you will hear rumbles and pops and squeaks(!) generated by such things as your mouse, hard drive and optical drives....all these somehow transmit their mechanical noise and electrical interference through the onboard sound for your aural appreciation. Also the sound ouput is at a very low volume. All these problems disappear on the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review PCChips 810LMR: chips with everything! (138 words)

The PC chips 810lmr board is very under rated, but for a cheapish motherboard it is a very good buy. The new version of this board will take up to the Athlon 1800xp processor which for the price is a good selling point. Everything is onboard, upto 64mb graphics which can be set at 4,8,16 32,64mbs, Onboard sound and onboard 56k modem (amr). It also has onboard LAN. The board will take upto 1gig of sdram memory which is beyond most peoples requirements. The graphics work well with DVD and top 3d games. There is also room for expansion with this board as there are 2 spare PCI slots and 1 AGP slot so if you dont like onboard you can put in your own graphics choice. Overall the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Protac International not to be trusted (255 words)

Rating:

I have been involved in the computer assembly and retail business for 13 years and I cannot think of a Far East company worthy of more criticism than Protac International who are responsible for the PC Chips product. You have to get things into perspective when dealing with companies like this. This is a company who supplied Motherboards with FAKE chips mounted on their motherboards back in 1995. They supplied tens of thousands 486 Motherboards to the UK computer market with chips they called 'write-back cache'. The term was ambiguous at the time but it was expressed in the terms of a chip that supported the CPU operation and was understood by the ...  Read the complete review
