Advantages: Cheap (ish)
Disadvantages: Claim service, Speed
Now there's a funny thing to call your insurance broking company. What are always told never to accept - your First Quote. Still, we did accept their quote for motor insurance. Myself and my soon-to-be wife are 24 and 23,have one-years no claims, a P-reg escort, live in Perivale in London and have no off-street parking. To the motor insurance trade we may as well just be leaving the keys sellotaped to the bonnet, judging by the premiums we've been quoted. Has anyone ever found a good and cheap London Motor insurance company? Now sadly, to First Quote, the old addage applies: GOOD - CHEAP - FAST: PICK ANY TWO. Funnily enough, this seems to apply to any service you can think of, (with a couple of exceptions to a handful of really good companies). Basically, if they're cheap and fast, they're not good, if they're good and fast, they're not cheap, you see how it goes. I returned to my car a few months ago to find that it had been hit whilst parked. Thankfully the driver had left his insurance details (how many people would have done that given the repair bill of around £750 to my car?). We phoned first quote to get help and advice about what to do. They immediately actioned a claim procedure, warned us about our no-claims bonus, and got completely the wrong end of the stick. And then nothing happened. That's right, everything went quiet. So I decided (possibly rather stupidly with hindsight) to sort it out myself, which I did, and I now have a repaired car. Unfortunately, however many times we explained the situation to first quote, they could not understand the fact that there was no more claim - the car was now fine - "but its been in an accident, sir!" Yes, but its been repaired, because you were to slow in dealing with it all. Thankfully the matter is (I'm told) now closed, but not after a lot of faffing about. So there you are. They're cheap and good, unt
il it comes to making a claim, when they're service shot downhill. Again, remember that I am just one customer, and my situation was fairly unique, so don't let me totally put you off. Just be warned.

- 13/05/01 It appears that the saying 'You get what you pay for' rings true in most cases.
'Two out of three ain't bad', but when can we have all three together?

- 13/05/01 Good op. You find that with most insurance companies (Direct Line n my case). Friendly and helpful as can be until you claim - then you transfered to a bloke in a shed you'd couldn't give a crap about you!
