Advantages: They do try and get you a decent price, at least the first time you get insurance with them.
Disadvantages: They do not insure you directly so your actual insurer might give you problems. Can you be confident of what they're telling you?
AA Insurance do not do a bad job. To be fair they appear to have a search system designed to give you a good price. I was pleased with mine to start with, 10% off what I was paying and my insurance excess was reduced to £50 on any claim. Pretty decent I thought. My policy came through and I discovered that it was through Drake Insurance. I had not heard of them, but did not think it would be a problem as having been found through the AA they would be a reputable company which would not give me any problems. They may well have been a decent company, but it did not stop them entering liquidation. Since then I have had a multitude of forms to fill in. Worst of all due to Drake Insurance entering liquidation I might have to pay for repair work on a broken windscreen. Not very impressive for a fully comprehensive policy. So due to Drake Insurance I will not be renewing my insurance with the AA. I do feel slightly sorry for them but I hope that Drake's demise will lead to them researching who they work with a bit more in future. UPDATE 5th December 2000 Well I got my renewal notice in from the AA. Without going into specific details it was not far off double what I had paid before. Not bad for someone who had only one claim in a whole year, a broken window which supposedly would not affect my no claims bonus. I rang the AA to ask why it was so high. Apparently I only had one year's no claims bonus with them. I asked about the previous price and about my three previous years of no claims bonus I had with my previous insurer. Apparently I had not mentioned them, and instead I had been offered a 50% introductory discount by the AA. Oddly I had never been told about the introductory discount when getting my insurance in the first place. Neither had I been asked about my no claims history. No, the AA were just trying to get my custom by offering me a cheaper price, regardless of my no claims history.
I did not think I could be more disappointed with the AA, I was wrong. Needless to say I will not be renewing my policy with them.

lamorna - 05.12.00 You are not a happy bunny with Motor Insurance are you? Neither am I, but I've just got used to it. I can't make out why you were not asked about your previous no-claim record, unless as it was introductory, and you being relatively young they've tried to grab and keep you with that 50% introduction offer. It never gets any better, but it just won't seem so bad. |
