Advantages: Save lots of money...

Disadvantages: Can take up quite a bit of time on the phone or Net

Ever seen that TV ad where a dominant young lady browbeats her husband about the fact that she rang the AA to get car insurance?

Sounds great doesn't it?

Well don't be fooled. Get a few quotes first from the familiar direct insurance companies via their 0800 numbers, weigh them up and then try the AA.

You might be surprised to find that the Fourth Emergency Service seems to be subsidising its recovery operation judging by the best quote it can turn up.

My own comprehensive insurance, for a Group 10 VW Jetta 1.6 TX, has remained at £155 for the past three years despite general insurance premium rises.

This year I only managed to retain that price because I switched from otherwise excellent Touchline (now a broker like the AA and who quoted £237 to renew) to AXA.

Ironically AXA took over Guardian Royal Exchange, my very first car insurance company, so it was a case of deja vu to some extent.

During the course of my research into obtaining quotes I rang the AA and, indeed, the RAC.

To say I was horrified at their best quotes would be putting it kindly - both were asking considerably more than double what I was paying.

Even Saga and Age Concern, who are supposed to help "elderly" people like me who have passed the 50 mark, wanted around 50 per cent more than my existing outlay.

So it pays to shop around. It might take an hour or two and you have to keep answering the same questions for each company - but the cost saving will buy a fair amount of very expensive fuel!

Shopping around for insurance quotes is essential to minimise the pain of renewing your cover. Most worrying, despite the ads claiming massive savings I find that web-based insurers tend to quote a lot more. Norwich Union Direct, AXA and Direct line being the exceptions.
