Advantages: Quotation easy to get
Disadvantages: Not as cheap as others, Useless when things go wrong
I was insured with the AA about five years ago and had a bad experience then. I paid my premium up front and after about six months, I sold my car. I couldn't believe it when I only got a £50 refund for six months insurance. I guess that's how they make their money though so I put it down to experience. Eighteen months ago, I was shopping around for insurance and logged on to most of the on line quotation web sites. The AA web site was simple enough to use and not too long winded. Although AA weren't the cheapest (try Direct Line or Tesco), they did give a better quality of premium (free courtesy car in case of accident primarily). Despite my reservations, I took the policy out with them. At the time of renewal, my premium sky rocketed so I transferred my insurance to another company, who were cheaper and gave the same level of insurance. When I first took out my policy, I had a claim pending, I was assured that they would put it down as pending and refund me if it was settled in my favour. You've guessed what's coming. Shortly after transferring to a different insurance company, the claim was settled in my favour. Despite two phone calls and several letters, the AA will not respond to my request for a refund. My previous insurers, Admiral, sent me the refund by return of post but the AA seem to be hoping I'll go away if they ignore me long enough. In addition, whenever I took my car in to the garage and was provided with a courtesy car I was charged £12.50 a day by the AA for putting this on my policy. My current insurers include this for free. They are happy enough to take your money but that's where their interest ends. If their quote is much cheaper then certainly take out your insurance with them, but don't expect them to be on your side if things go wrong.
