Admiral Car Insurance
Disadvantages: Rude and pushy.
I am writing this review for two reasons one to warn others about this companies attitude and secondly to get this off my chest! Some of you may know that my other halfs car insurance is up for renewal in January but with a baby due on the 3rd we thought that it was best to get organised and sort out the insurance before I went into labour!... well I'll tell you now that nearly did not happen! (lol!)
My other half and I are always looking out for a bargain and what with a baby on the way cannot really afford to 'waste' money. Therefore we decided to use a price comparison site whilst trying to find the best deal for us. My other half has been driving for 11 years and has not had any claim in that time (touch wood he doesn't either! Gosh I hope that I haven't just tempted fate!). When the search came back the best quote by far was Admiral. As we wanted to pay for the year up front (rather than pay an extortionate APR) we had to ring Admiral customer service as this option is not availabe on-line. A bit of a pain as we had to ring during office hours, and of course the cost of the phone call (as local rate 0845 numbers do not apply on mobile phones). We therefore rang a couple of days later, not straight away.
We rang up and at first the person on the line was quite helpful. However they went through the quote again with us, trying to add on everything they could (you know the usual thing, protected no claims, legal cover, breakdown cover, someone to come and de ice your car between april and october etc!). We patiently explained that we did not want any of this just to pay for the premium up front for the year at the price that had been quoted. Unfortunately we were then informed that this quote no longer stood. The actual quote would be an extra £100 on top of what had already been quoted. When we asked why, obviously a little miffed that we had just spent ten minutes on the phone to get to this conclusion. Admiral informed us it was because there had been a claim on the policy earlier on in the year. We were slightly confused and asked what it was they were talking about as no claim had ever been made. It turned out that the 'claim' they were talking about was not a claim but a notification. This happened when a deer had decided to jump on our car causing a smashed number plate and a small dint on the drivers side wheel arch. We rang our insurance company (which you are meant to do) to tell them what had happened to and find out the excess on the policy. They informed us of the excess and told us to get some quote to repair the damage. We got the quotes and it was a lot less than we had expected and so paid for the work to be done ourselves and informed our insurance company. They were happy with this but as with all calls to places like that, it was logged and put down as a notification.
We explained this to Admiral who were quite shirty with us and informed us that we should be putting down a 'non-fault based claim' whilst getting quotes, and that all insurance companies would quote higher because of this notification. Not happy with this we rang our existing insurance company to try and get this resolved. They were most helpful and explained that that was not the case. It had to be a notification and couldn't be taken off of the record and it was a logged call but it shouldn't affect the policy quote. They even offered to speak to Admiral themselves if we were unable to get it resolved. After several more calls to Admiral ad several more rude people on the other end of the phone we were geting very frustrated with the lack of progress. I suggested to my other half that we just try another compnay as if this is what Admiral were like when trying to get your business then what woudl they be like shouldwe ever need to claim? It sent a shudder down my back!
We therefore logged back onto the price comparison site to discover that all of the quotes that we had gotten previously had in fact expired and we would need to re search. We did this and low and behold Admiral were no longer the cheapest, in fact their quote came out at what they had told us over the phone. Very suspicious if you ask me!
Needless to say, we haven't gone with Admiral. We have actually decided to go with Tesco Value as that is who insures my car and they are brilliant! Always helpful and the premiums are very good value.
I will never use Admiral for any insurance after this experience. They were rude and very pushy. They obviuosly couldn't meet the original quote and instead of explaining that to us made up some story about a claim, that didn't exist. Causing stress and anxiety to us.
Summary: Admiral have left a bad taste in my mouth, I will not use them.
