Advantages: cheap
Disadvantages: terrible service
I bought 2 policies from Admiral to insure my 2 cars totaling over £1000 since they were the cheapest I could find !! Anyway, I decided to lessen the financial blow by paying monthly via direct debit. Each policy had it's own direct debit mandate. Everything was fine for a year and a half (yes they automatically renewed my policies and I kept paying). Then I sold one of my cars and cancelled the policy. I then cancelled the direct debit mandate. Now, here I made a mistake, I cancelled the wrong mandate ! But, it was an honest mistake. Anyway, I was working out of the country for the next 4 weeks. During that time Admiral wrote to me and told me the direct debit had been stopped. A couple of weeks later they wrote again to tell me they were cancelling my policy. On my return I read the letters and instantly realised what I had done. I phoned them up to explain and said I would not only pay what was owed but would clear the remaining balance to the end of the year (£650) there and then. They said no !!! Infact, they said I was now considered a bad payer and that they would never offer me insurance again ever !!! I couldn't believe it ! I explained again my simple mistake and circumstances and reminded them I had always been a good payer holding 2 policies worth over a grand to them ! They didn't care ! I wrote a letter to their customer services department explaining the whole thing again, using small words incase they had difficulting grasping it! They wrote back basically saying rules were rules and they don't make exceptions !! I think companies that give this type of unsympathetic customer service don't deserve customers !! My advise would be - pay a little bit more for your policy and get decent service !!
