Advantages: Premiums for high performance cars are very reasonable.
Disadvantages: none
I contacted lots of insurance companies when we were looking for cover for my sons Renault 19 16v,he first bought the car he was 22,so the fact that he was under 25,and driving a high performance car meant that finding him cover at a reasonable rate was going to be a problem, some would not even quote a price, some were sky high premiums, however Admiral were very reasonable,so we decided to go with them,he was able to pay the premium monthly, via a direct debit from his bank account, although there is an additional charge for this. Each year we checked around, but Admiral still came out cheapest, after about 3 years,he was involved in an accident,a stupid woman ran into the back of him,he was parked at the time, with his engine off!!mind you,the fact that she was eating a macdonalds and drinking a milkshake as well as driving probably did not help her attention span !! Bearing in mind that a Renault 19 16v is a big heavy car,she managed to write it off,the back caved in,and the driving seat collapsed,3 years later he still suffers from back pain, and we are still fighting for compensation. Admiral were very quick in getting a loss adjuster out ,when he declared it a write off, they came up with a ridiculous settlement figure, which we turned down, they came back with another equally ridiculous amount, and that was also rejected,we were told that they were going by the book value of the car, taking into consideration its age and the mileage, there was no way on earth that we could find another car in the same condition for the money they were offering. I am sure they must have been sick to the back teeth of us,but I was not going to accept less than the cost for us to replace the car,I sent them copies of adverts for similar cars,to show what it was going to cost to but another one,I also told them not to pay us any money, just find a replacement car,the same year and with the same sort of mileage, and deliver it to us!! After several weeks of
argueing the point, they finally came up with a very reasonable offer,so we accepted it,and a couple of weeks later he found another car and after he had paid for it he still had £300 left from the insurance payout. Despite all that,I cannot fault Admiral,I am sure it is the policy of all insurance companies to pay book price, but thats so unfair to the policy holder, especially in a no fault claim,so if you are unlucky enough to have to make a claim, dont settle unless you are satisfied that you can buy a replacement car with the offer they make to you.

- 27/03/02 Thanks for the information on fighting for a fair compensation for suffering accidents not your fault.
I've heard many similar stories with others with different companies, so it is not just Admiral that 'try it on'. |

- 19/05/01 I am also 23 years old and I have had major problems finding value-for-money insurance on a similar powered vehicle - unfortunately Admiral were not so cheap for me!!
But the personal injury claims details are useful as I am in a neck brace at the moment after a car accident that wasn't my fault!! |
