Admiral are a direct insurer which means they only have their own policy to sell, unlike a broker company or intermediary who can shop around from a panel of insurers. This often means that these direct are somewhat restricted in certain markets, and often have to be niche players. I think admiral can suffer from this niche status, which often polarises opinions. They are either very competitive for their niche market, or not for those people outside their niche. I have found that it is better to shop around at renewal time to ensure that the rate you get is the best for you. I have used Admiral several times over the last few years but at times when I was outside their target market I went elsewhere. It pays to shop around.
