Advantages: cheap

Disadvantages: charges, excess and missing post

I purchased car insurance on the internet. I got there detials via a comparison web site.

I was not provided with a summary of the insurance before I made the final payment, and was left to believe that the excess I had chosen, £50, was in fact what the final quote was based upon.

A week later, I received an insurance certificate, but I still hadn’t been given any policy details, either via the internet as confirmation of my purchase, or in writing. The only information I received was a confirmation of the amount of my policy on the day of purchase.

I rang Budget today, to ask about my policy details, and after asking for them about 3 times was eventually told that excess for my policy is £200, not £50. I was told this may be a computer error!

When I said that I did not want a policy that cost £197 with an £200 excess, I was told that I will have to pay £20 to cancel my policy. This is even more shocking given its not even started yet and I have not received any details of it.

I have had to keep my policy, or pay £20, but I feel their practises need further investigation.

Summary: take care - watch out for changes to excess charges

You'd normally have 14 days to cool off and cancel BUT if you have no policy details I doubt very much that time should have started to run - you should be able to cancel. If not contact the insurance ombudsman (google him!) and see whether they can help.

Sounds very shoddy practice to me, send them a link to this review and they'll know that you're spreading the word about their underhand methods of doing business! Maybe you'll get something out of them. :)
