Disadvantages: Totally dreadful when you need to make a claim.

Both mine and my husband's cars were stolen Christmas Eve. Direct Line were closed over the Christmas period so I had to wait until December 27th to report it to them. The advisor took minimal info from me and said someone would call me back in 48 hours. I asked about a hire car and was told, "sorry, we removed that as standard from our policy and now you have to request it adding" - Thats what you get for being a loyal customer and allowing your insurance to automatically renew!! I was also told that even if I had it I would have to wait for my claim to be investigated before they would give me a hire car.

I did not recieve the call back within 48 hours and so I had to call them. I was told by the advisor that the callback I had taken a day off work to wait for was just to arrange yet another callback in which I could eventually give the details of the theft. How much red tape?? I then spoke to a manager who would not back down so am now waiting for my appointment to discuss my claim. I have both cars and home and contents insurance with Direct Line and will most certainly be looking for a new provider.

Summary: Direct Line only added to my misery of having my car stolen.

I would never consider letting insurance companies renew and even more so now after reading this! I've never considered Direct Line seriously as an insurer as I've heard some awful stories from friends who've had problems with call backs from them. Hope it gets resolved soon and hope whoever stole your and your husband's cars grow nasty warts all over their body! x

car hire has never been included with car insurance...direct line did launch a new aspect to cover a short while ago. I auto renew and got info on it...

I'm sorry you have had such a rotten Christmas. I have always found Direct Line great to deal with, but I think this serves as warning against letting insurance automatically renew - you should always check annual changes in your policy. Hopefully it will be sorted out soon for you.
