Advantages: None!

Disadvantages: Misleading!

This is the worst motor insurer I have ever used!

When I first took out my policy with them, I was attracted to them by their cheap quote, and the fact that I could go on my Mothers insurance (being a new driver) ands still build up my new claims policy. I thought that this wa a great deal!

I renewed my insurance with them for about three years, as I was happy with their cheap quotes.

One year, however, I dcided to search around, and I found a cheaper insurer, so I wanted to change. I called Direct Line to cancel my insurance policy with them, and ask them for proof of my no claims bonus.

They told me that the no claims bonus was NON TRANSFERABLE because I was not the policy holder!

I called back my new insurer of choice, and they confirmed this. They said that Direct Line is unique in this respect, and of course, without proof of three years of No Claims, my quote went up significantly!

I called several other insurers to confirm this, and they all did. They sounded like they had heard this all before.

I called Direct Line to complain, and the man was unhelpful. He also sounded like he had heard all of this before, and was just a puppet for the company.

Because they had not made me aware of this policy before, I ended up paying a lot more for my insurance and had to start building my No Claims again!

Summary: Avoid at all costs!

Afraid you were misinformed however if you had taken out a policy with them in your own name after building up your own NCD after one year of your insurance in your own name then they would have honoured your NCD if you applied else where. Welcome to the world of insurance!

All insurance companies are like this, you cannot transfer 'offers' to other companies. Another famous one is getting a "one years no claims after 10 months", but you cannot transfer this, since 10 months is not a year according to any other companies. These offers are classed as loyalty offers and you get rewarded for being loyal, but you can end up getting tied in to that company.

In the past I've simply sent off my renewal statement which should show the NCD that was applied - insurers have been fine with this.
