Advantages: None

Disadvantages: Plenty!!

We currently have our car insurance with Direct Line having purchased it through their internet site. We will not be renewing with themselves in November. Our recent experience with their handling of our claim after a recent accident was disgusting. The accident was entirely my fault as the driver, dazzled by sunlight and hit the back of a 4x4 Isuzu Trooper with a Tow-bar on. A scratch to the Isuzu on it's bumper but a rather crumpled bonnet and right sided headlight damage to our 6 month old Renault Scenic. Thinking oh the little red phone makes it all so easy as the advert suggests - Think again. They were very quick to come to my home to collect the vehicle, which was in a driveable state. Having checked with our own Renault Dealer, I was informed that our warranty would be invalid if they carried out the work at Direct Line Accident Centre and I should have been offered the choice of where the vehicle was repaired. Telephoned Direct Line who say the vehicle will be 2 weeks minimum! Having requested the vehicle is returned to my home address and I will drive it to Rotherham to be repaired at the Renault Body Shop, Direct Line were very difficult and after many a phone call to the Senior Supervisor I had my vehicle returned minus all the lights, so the poor driver man had to take it to Rotherham as I was extremely angry and annoyed. To cut an even longer story short I had the vehicle repaired and returned to me within 4 days. Not the 2 weeks quoted by Direct Line.

If only I had read this before I signed up and got fully comp insurance with Direct Line. They were fine until I had an accident. I have now been without a car for 8 weeks. No hire care supplied either. I had no choice where the car went and have to phone myself to get updates on how the car is coming along! I can't work without a car, and am in a position where I am stuck in the house all day as my other half has his car at work and thus I can't go anywhere! I have spoken to someone who used to work in garage and was informed that the sort of job my car needs doing on it should take 1-2 weeks! They are cheap, but then that seems to be because when you have an accident they don't actually work very hard on the case!!!

I would recommend Royal Sun Alliance, they are brilliant. I used to work for them when they were The Insurance Service and know the way that they operate. I will not insure my car with a broker as there are too many people involved and we had a claim on my car a few months ago and it was all sorted over the phone and within a week the car was repaired and brought back to my house. I have tried direct line for a quote and they are more expensive than Royal sun alliance. Try their web site !

I've heard quite a few negative comments about Direct Line. They might be cheap, but they seem like more trouble than they're worth.
