Advantages: Cheap, quick and online
Disadvantages: none really
They Guarantee to beat your renewal quote – and they match that guarantee! Great quotes good and quick! My colleague was sitting here lunchtime ringing insurance companies to renew his car insurance. I asked him if he'd tried Egg and he said, do they do insurance? I thought this was a strange question considering he logs onto their site at least once each day to look at his credit card bill – sucker! Off we went to the Egg site and started filling out the form for a "quick quote". Basically you answer six questions and they give you a rough quote. They keep the number of questions down this low by checking your registration number against the DVLA computer to bring up your vehicle details. No worries if you don't know the registration number, you just get taken to another screen to fill out the details yourself. The quick quote looked good at just over £500 when he had been quoted £750 elsewhere. We then proceeded to fill out the rest of the online form. All standard stuff, we gave details of his nasty accident a few years ago as well as the 3 points he picked up for speeding last year. (It was a work thing, three of my colleagues met that policeman that day!). Neither of these had much bearing on his policy as the accident was not his fault and you usually get allowed one small speeding conviction. We were asked if he wanted to protect his no claims bonus and said yes, something that usually puts the price up considerably. After completing all the details we were given a quote of £547 to insure with Prudential (Egg's parent company). This went up a further £12 with the addition of Legal expenses insurance (everyone should have this). We were not interested in the Green Flag recovery cover, which would have been an extra £49. You also get free keycare cover, which covers replacement locks if you lose your keys, a nice bonus I thought. You then get the option to buy the policy or save the qu
ote for later, handy if you are shopping around. We did save the quote but as we were both customers my colleague used his existing customer details to save it with. There may be another small form to fill in if you are not already a customer. I quickly ran through a quote for my own car and found it to be just £381.90. This time not with the Prudential. Again this is much cheaper than I paid a few months ago when I bought my car. I did expect this to be higher as my named driver is my father and he has turned 71 since I insured, something which I was told would increase the premiums. I would thoroughly recommend the Egg service (it might make my shares go up!). The quotes are great and the forms are quick and simple to fill in online. Give them a try, what have you got to lose?

- 14/01/01 To be honest I didn't look at all the little extras as I wasn't personally interested in buying insurance, my colleague did and found them favourable. Next I'm going to look at their house insurance, again just out of curiosity. |

- 14/01/01 Nice op. So you got shares with them too! Perhaps one day they'll get back to their starting price - and no dividends either :( |

- 13/01/01 Good detailed opinion- cheers- how do they compare with regard to all the little 'extras' eg. courtesy cars, windscreen, excesses? |
