Advantages: Cheap, Easy to buy, Great customer service
Disadvantages: None so far
I am one of those people who insist on checking 50 different companies for my car insurance every year despite most brokers claiming they can do all that for me. It pays off though. Years ago when a phone call or a personal trip to your broker was the only way it was painful - now the internet makes it super easy even if it is still time consuming. So this year like every year previous I did my usual check of all the online companies and for the second year running egg were unbeatable. The first year I choose to insure with them the quote was just under £500 despite all other brokers and direct insurers charging me at least £950! I didn't believe it and actually phoned them up to check the quote and find out what was missing from the cover. Nothing, no huge excess, hire cars and windscreen covered with a small excess. I don't know how they did it but I bought it before they found out what they don't. (An insurance company once misquoted me for my first car - they charged me £500 too little and tried to make me pay when they discovered the mistake) This year as usual the renewal increased but in fairness I did add the requirement to cover 15k business miles and 3 extra points on my licence but at £700 it is still a good £400 less than the next best quote. It doesn't work for everyone - when I discovered Egg I told all my colleagues, however non of them could get such a big reduction. Why me? - I'm 27, drive and IG8 Ford Focus 1.8 Ghia, have 4 years no claim, live in a fairly high postcode risk (M21), park on the road, 6 points on my licence (made very little difference to the quote) and drive high annual business mileage. I don't know what all this means to an insurance company but somebody is prepared to edge their bets to give me such a low quote against all other companies. Getting a quote --------------- Easy-peasy if you're ok with the Internet. The quick quote they give y
ou after 2 screens is a bit misleading but intended to keep your interest through the boring part. You can save an retrieve quotes on the site, and pay with your egg credit card for extra bonuses. Putting it to the test ---------------------- I've only ever claimed for a windscreen but that was very straightforward. A new one was fitted within days and I just paid the agreed excess to the fitter. I've had to change my cover in the middle of the cover and also get a replacement certificate, both happened smoothly without hassle. I am a fan of Egg and have been ever since that fantastic online savings account. I now have a credit card, loan and car insurance with them, simply because they have the best deals and are so easy to use online. If I had to name some downsides I'd find it difficult. Car insurance is difficult to judge by anything other than cost until you need to use it.

- 12/11/02 Good review, I work in the insurance industry and you are right to shop around but 50 may be a bit extreme! |
