Extortionate Endsleigh (Endsleigh Insurance)
Advantages: Will insure everyone Disadvantages: Expensive, Hard to get cash out of
In my first year of Uni I did as most freshers do and insured my meagre belongings with Endsleigh. I believe Endsleigh was set up by the NUS so you think they’d be the best deal around. Right? Well usually no. Certainly if you live in halls it’s fine and not too pricey, the problems start when you live out. Having lived in a high crime area of a big city, I was led to believe that Endsleigh would be the only insurers to take us on (which they do nothing to dispel). I paid their extortionate fees (about £100) for £2000 worth of cover. The next year I was a bit more cautious and a bit poorer. I red through the small print and for most items there was a sizable excess seeing as the maximum I could get back would be £2000. I also realised that living in my house of 3, some contents were insured 3 times (like damage to communal property). I bet if we had to claim, they wouldn’t pay out 3 times! Therefore we were paying £300 for a paultry £6000 worth of cover between us. So I tried ringing around for insurance for the whole house. I’m not going to claim it’s easy, ironically because Endsleigh exists some insurers won’t take students on anymore rather than the other way round. Both that year and the subsequent year I managed to insure our house. A good tip is to try through a broker if you’re a student as they can accept you on different terms. Last year though I was insured by HSBC for £15,000 cover for £88 for the whole house. Summary: |
