Advantages: Cover repairs, supply hire cars etc
Disadvantages: Your premium will double
Is car insurance fair? I don't think so after my recent experience. After being rear ended twice in two months by 2 careless drivers, i am the one left out of pocket once again.
My first unfortunate incident was in a queue of traffic where everyone was stationary in front and behind when all of a sudden the driver behind decided he wanted to go through me even though i hadn't moved and neither had the other 15 cars in front of me! The second was a driver on a motorway who decided to change lanes and not paying attention to the slowing traffic ahead slammed into the back of my 6 week old bumper!
Neither accident i am sure you would agree was my fault. The insurers of these careless drivers also agreed and quickly took the decision to accept full liability.
What you ask is unfair about this? Well having now renewed my car insurance my premium has now doubled!! I have not lost my no claims, I have not had any fault aportioned to me, but apparently i am a greater risk than any other driver that has not been hit from the rear! As far as i am concerned i am only a greater risk if these two people were driving behind me again!
My insurance comapny has got all the monies it has paid out for my repairs from the other insurance company so why am i a greater risk? They have not lost anything and in fact probably managed to claim back other admin fees etc and turned a profit. So my misfortune has cost me. Not the other driver whose NCD is probably protected, not the insurance companies but ME!!
Be warned, if you get the chance from the other driver to settle without involving insurance companies i would say take it! At least your premiuim won't go up for something that isn't your fault.
Summary: A greater risk? Moi?

cmh4135 - 24.09.07 Be very wary about settling without insurance companies that you don't admit any liability - you could find that you end up in a worse position as an insurance claim can still be made and it could be hard to prove your agreement. |
