Advantages: Saves big ££££'s

Disadvantages: Time consuming

When my car insurance was recently due for renewal, I noticed that the premium had gone up for no unexplained reason. When I asked for an explanation, I was told that it was because I drive a Suzuki - apparently a lot of "boy racers" drive them and some insurance companies rate the premiums,others won't touch them. Anyway, I decided that the time had come to ring round for a few alternative quotes (many of the numbers are now freephone numbers). I spent a couple of hours with yellow pages and got quotes for my car, my husbands car and my fathers car and managed to reduce all three premiums by at least £50 a year. The point is that different companies have different deals. My father was being rated for his insurance because he was a diabetic - the new company doesn't rate diabetics much higher providing they don't have certain symptoms. I was being rated for driving a Suzuki and my husband for being self-employed and using his vehicle to go to and from various different work sites. You'd have to make an awful lot of 'phone calls to spend £50, especially if you call during cheap rate.It's worth a couple of hours to get a good deal.
