Advantages: eventually sorted

Disadvantages: should not have got to that stage in the first place

In 1998 (yes I know going back a bit but believe me this is still useful), It came to renewing my car insurance with Kwik Fit. I had my current insurance with them and had done so for the past couple of years. However I was considering changing cars towards the end of the year and so potentially looking for other qoutes for the new car. I informed Kwik Fit that I would like to take advantage of a policy that they were offering where by I could insure my car for 10 months rather than 1yr. I asked them if there were any penalties if I cancelled my insurance before that time e.g if they could not give me a good quote on my new car. They said that there would be no penalties as I would only be changing insurance because they would not be able to match another comapny quote.

Cut a long story short I agreed and about 8 months into my renewal I purchased my new car. I asked Kwik Fit for a quote but they were too expensive. So as agreed I cancelled my insurance with them.

Low and behold I recieved threatening letters amounting to the fact that I had broken my contract with them and they would require full payment of 1yrs insurance.

After many letters and phone calls I decided that HO and branches were not communicating to each other and took legal advice.

What I discovered is a lovely law called ESTOPLE. Where by I could not be held responsible for breaking a contract when the contract/agreement had been mis sold to me. After all I only acted as I did on the advice of the person who sold me my insurance and they in turn are a representative of the company.

It ended well but I recommend be careful when listening to advice from companies no one seems to talk to each other any more.

Remember the word ESTOPLE.

Unfortunate experience but probably not fair review of Kwik Fit Insurance. So it goes to show it pays to read the small print yourself, believe nothing on the phone.
