I recently shopped around for insurance quotes and was been surprised by the wide range of quotations being offered - the variance in some cases is over £1,000.

I had a minor accident 4 years ago. One of the things which I have noticed when the insurers ask for details to compile the quote is that some insurers ask whether you have had an accident in the past 3 years whilst others take a more cautious approach and ask if there has been an accident in the last 5 years. One even asked if there had been any accidents in the last 7 years!

This clearly affects the premium that you will be offered. My advice would be to stick to those insurers that do not hold it against you for one minor problem more than 3 years ago.

Another way of reducing your premium is to try an online quoting service and play around with the options - e.g. voluntary excess, value of car, miles, etc.
