Advantages: none

Disadvantages: over priced, very few companies will even quote for cover in Northern Ireland

I keep seeing all these fantastic insurance deals being flashed before me on my television screen.

'Get cheaper insurance here' , 'We'll beat anyother quote' , 'Come to us, we're the best'.

Great, you might think, a break for the motorist. However, 9 out of 10 companies that I phone won't cover Northern Ireland. I have gotten so sick of hearing the words 'Oh, I'm so sorry, we don't cover there.'

I am aware that Northern Ireland may offer a higher than normal risk of damage than your average British area. However, insurance companies are not the ones who pay out if your car is damaged, stolen etc as a result of terrorism. It is the Northern Ireland Office.

Why then, can anyone tell me, am I paying an average of 4 times more than all of my friends in the UK?

My last insurace premium for a Range Rover (which is by no strentch of the imagination a speedy machine) was £975. That was for 3rd party , fire & theft only. To go fully comp would have cost me £1300. Crazy isn't it.

I have a friend in Scotland who also drives a Range Rover, only his is 3 years newer than mine. Guess how much his insurance is - and it's fully comp....£297.

My husband's bike insurance is the same. Either a company won't quote at all, or if you find one that does, you can expect to be ripped off. His bike insurance is £790 - 3rd party only.

Perhaps the insurance companies have decided that we don't have enough hassle to put up with in NI - lets give them more sh*t to deal with, eh?

I wouldn't mind so much, but I have full no claims discount. I wonder why I bother.
