Disadvantages: pain and heart ache

Reading my local evening paper the other night I stumbled across the "Court In Brief" section , after close scrutiny I read that 12 different people had been convicted for driving their car without insurance and if memory serves me correctly the highest penalty any of them recieved was £150.00 fine, 8 points on their licence and ordered to pay costs of £30.00. I have 2 vehicles a car and a van and in total I pay almost £2000.00 per year for the peace of mind that if I were unlucky enough to be in an accident that my damages would be paid for but primarily the fact that if I were to injure someone or god forbid even cause someones death then that person or their family would at least have the benefit of compensation! I feel that anyone who blatantly and meaningly drives any vehicle on the roads without motor insurance is willfully brandishing a lethal weapon and putting 2 fingers up to society. These people should at very minimum recieve much harsher penalties and to an extreme they should be made to attend road traffic accidents , help paramedics , firemen and police officers scrape the remains of victims from the wreckage and then go and explain to their families why they must secure a loan against their house or sell their car to pay for the loved ones funeral who has just been killed by someone too irresponsible and antisocial to insure their vehicle!

I was pleased to read the reassurances of Johhny and rdobbie. For all that, I agree with your sentiments 100%.

I had an accident just two days ago so I have to say I wholehearted agree that insurance is definitely worth paying for just for the peace of mind! Sue

I strongly agree with your op. Insured motorists pay £25-30 each per year from their premiums to fund the Motor Insurers Bureau, which Johnny mentions below. One piece of good news, however, is that the police now have a motor insurance database which can instantly identify uninsured vehicle on the roads, and hopefully root them out. Quite why it took them until 2002 to develop this database is beyond me.
