Advantages: Good price & service, Willing to insure young drivers, Friendly staff
Disadvantages: None
I was 17 at the time, and still had not passed my driving test, but was so sure that I was that I went to buy myself a new car. I had a large range of cars in mind, and I knew, or so I thought, finding insurance cover was going to be difficult. I was refused at every single insurance company, so I thought i'll get my mother to be insured on the car, and to add me as a named driver. And that's what I did, and still got refused insurance from many large insurance companies such as Churchill, Elephant.co.uk, AXA etc, the list goes on. As my mother was already insured by Norwich Union I thought i'll give them a try. I got a price of £750 and was absolutely shocked, especially as the cheapest quote I got so far was £1300. My mother has seven years of no claims bonus, and this is what I thought made it so cheap. But Direct Line gave me a quote of £3700, yes 3700 pounds! and Tesco £1400. The excess I had to pay on Norwich Union direct was 150 pounds, and for glass claims 50 pounds. The staff were very friendly and they even offered me a discount! The no-claims bonus was protected, so I could make 2 claims in 3 years without affecting my mothers long earnt 7 years no claims, and if I had to claim 3 times, it would half my mothers no claims bonus, so we'll still have 3 years. For anyone thinking about doing this though, you can only use the no claims discount on one car, so my mother had to start with no no claims discount on her current car. She had also got 3 points from speeding, and Norwich Union were the only insurance company not to add some extra on the premium because, and I quote from the lovely lady who answered the phone, "We understand that many drivers are caught sppeding at some point, and that speed cameras are used to make money for the government, and many
people in Britain today already have 3 ponits or more on their license". They answered the phone quickly and I had called them a few times just to make sure the quote still stood as I was still shopping around. In the end I took out the insurance with them. I had a renewal quite recently after one year with them, and beleive it or not, the renewal price was lower that the first time round! Normally, for my mother at least, the renewal price is always higher than the original first year price, but with Norwich Union it was different. The renewal price was £707, but I called them and they managed to get it down to £692 for 'customer loyalty'. Both times the insurance covered a courtesy car, legal cover, and no claims protection. This is a very professional company, that answer their calls quickly and have professional staff. Their number is also a free phone number. My sister has recently bought a new car, and again, they came out with the best price, at £640 for a 21 year old with no years no claims bonus. Norwich Union, keep up the good work! I'm sure I will continue to use them in the future, and may even switch my parents house insurance to them!
