Advantages: Cover for imported cars

Disadvantages: None

Royal and Sun Alliance, through What Car Insurance, are one of the few companies which will give comprehensive cover on a personal imported car, whilst the car is still abroad. A lot of places will only offer third party insurance for those first few miles. Their quote was competitive and the process for taking out the insurance was reasonable trouble free.

The one problem was that I was told that it was "illegal" to have the third party insurance that I got with the temporary Belgian license plates as well as their cover. They said that if I got stopped by police abroad, then they might not like the green card that I got from RSA, and that I should show them the third party insurance. They did assure me that if I hit a tree whilst abroad then I would have comprehensive cover.
