Been with Tesco car insurance for years till I came to change my car and get a few quotes in, wow glad I did Tesco were over 3 times as much as the other quotes. When it came to cancel with Tesco they charged me a £70 (seventy pound!) cancellation fee.

Cancelled insurance after paying in full for the year, car seized and facing criminal charges!

I took out a new policy with Tesco car insurance on November 3rd which I paid in full for the year. They then cancelled my policy without any notice on the January 8th.. They said that they never received proof of my 7 years no claims which I did send them. I was then pulled by police on January 13th and told my car wasn't insured which I was completely unaware of. I called Tesco whilst in the police car to find out what was wrong, they said they had cancelled my policy and could not reinstate it. My car was then seized and I was charged with no insurance which is a £300 fine and 6 penalty points if I don't take it to court. Tesco claim they had sent my letters which I never got. It changed to emails because it I took the policy out online. Then it was back to letters after I asked for proof of this. It seems that the admin team have been lying because I never received any letters or emails telling me my policy would be cancelled. A simple call to me or my previous insurer would have fixed this matter in seconds, but due total incompetence from Tesco staff I now face a criminal record, thousands in hiked insurance quotes, a fine of £300, 6 penalty points, £150 to the impound garage and extreme stress to me and my family. Please avoid Tesco at all costs. Its an absolute disgrace what has happened and they way they have treated me on this matter. They are unwilling to accept blame when I have done absolutely nothing wrong. I wish I had stayed with my previous insurer Hastings with was only £10 more to do. I have contacted the financial ombudsman and will speak to my lawyer tomorrow. Hopefully this will be fixed but either way i'm still out of hundreds of pounds

My Tesco car insurance auto renewed then three weeks later I found I could save £150 on the best price they had given me. We called to cancel (understanding we would pay the £30 cancellation fee) only to then be charged the full £89 for the Breakdown cover (we'd had for three weeks). Nowhere in the T&Cs is this covered. It's taken out with the RAC and if you buy independently you get a pro-rata rebate on the policy - so is Tesco keeping the balance? We asked to make a formal complaint and we were told we would get a phone call in 48hours. Still waiting! Bad value for money, rip off cancellation procedure and poor customer service - shame on you Tesco.

Cheap, and nasty to put it mildly.Cheap? Yes they are, but so is the service of the claims department if you manage to get a hold of them.Tesco are so nice, polite, and helpful. That is until you need to make a claim, then hang on tight, for the ride can be a very long time.Four months, and still not settled along with the take it or leave it attitude.50% of retail value is what you can expect which runs a little further than the shopping vouchers sometimes offered.Come on get real. Insurance is insurance, and if you want to be reasonably covered then ensure you go elsewhere. Tesco is profits only orientated.I only wish I had read reviews on Tesco first .........

Protect NCD unless you want to lose it all to Tesco

Back in 2011 went with Tesco for car insurance, at that time I had 13 years No Claims Discount(letters from previous insurers provided etc). For next 2 years stayed with them as I'd had no issues and no claims,so therefore took me up to 15 years of no claims. This year renewed with them again. Sadly though for me, some nice person decided to hit my car whilst parked and unattended in a car park and of course drive off without leaving any details. Not major damage but a nasty long dent down one side. Phoned up Tesco to initiate a claim as I had fully comprehensive. Imagine my surprise when I was told as they had no third party to claim off it would have to be claimed as a fault against my policy. Bad enough I thought but got lots worse, as it was now being classed as my fault I would lose no claims discount ( Hadn't ticked the protected NCD box). Ok, grin and bear it I thought, how many years I asked. I was told I would now go back to 3 years NCD. Bit of a shock thought I had misheard, so asked to clarify would I lose 3 years NCD. No, I would be back to having 3 years NCD, therefore losing 12 years for one claim.Asked how they could justify that and was told that Tesco only recognized a maximum of 9 years NCD, so still losing 6 years. Then further explained that that 9 years actually meant nothing for if there was a claim against a policy they would actually start calculations as if 5 years NCD was maximum. So 5 years NCD minus the 2 years for a claim took me down to 3 years NCD. What an absolute rip off, this is a sneaky way of putting people off making claims. Needless to say will not be renewing with Tesco ever again. Big tip, make sure you tick NCD protection and also check with insurers as to their policy with regards NCD.

I am having exactly same problem as Disgruntled over £40 gift card. I was told over the phone that because I went through price comparison site to get to them that I am not entitled. I am going to write to complain and then when as I anticipate no joy I will go to ombudsman. I may not win but I do know that the number of complaints each month from ombudsman are not looked upon favourably. Therefore everyone write to ombudsman.

You get exactly what you pay for

Lowest quote with best cover and incentives, just dont expect them come to deliver on their promises. Had a minor bump on a Friday and damaged the bumper and bonnet. Tesco's promised a courtesy car and collection of my car on Monday to be repaired. The garage finally collected Tuesday, no courtesy car was provided and then they quoted £1,800 for a new bonnet and bumper, so Tescos wrote it off. Also they say they'll automatically replace child seats fitted to the car at the time of an accident, but have your receipts or they'll only pay 70% of the cost for a like for like replacement. Ended positively though, they Cat C'd the car and paid out. I bought the car back and am getting it repaired for less than the payout, so their loss this time ;) Still won't be taking them up on their renewal offer next year!

do not use Halfords for MOT

Got the free MOT & Service voucher with my Insurance through Tesco. Booked the car in and ready to go. Having worked as a mechanic many years ago and still work on minor repairs to my vehicle and over 20 yrs of driving experience, I am familiar with the techno jargen and little white lies. Heres what happened Service: first off they told me I defo. need synthestic oil, thats £22. streight away. I paid this , thought what the hell, it would cost me that in time and oil anyway, but the surprise I had was that, it was just an oil change NO oil filter change (very Bad). I marked so I know its the same one, they just wiped it clean. MOT: They gave me a list of repairs 2 x A4 sheets full. Ranging from wiper blades to nackered brake discs Estimated cost £300 ish, Took the car to my regular MOT station, they found only 1 thing wrong, cost £40 for the MOT & £45. for the repair. I then asked my garage about the items Halfords had listed, their qualified opinion was: some of the items listed by Halfords were not a part of the MOT test, the rest were an exageration of any defect. There were only 2 item that fell in the category of a serious defect, that failed my mot. 1 of which I paid for and the other was a seized cylinder, which the tester fixed within 10 seconds, whilst he was doing my mot and did not charge me for it. The mot is made up of a fixed set of rules and only in a very few instances can an MOT tester apply his knowledge and opinion and even then if the vehicle passes the tests set, the tester has to pass the vehicle. Eg: the vehicle is put on rollers to test the braking system, the rollers give a reading, and if that reading meets the requirements of the MOT test the vehicle cannot be failed, regardless if the brake discs are showing slight signs of corrosion or thinning etc. So be aware: use a local recommended garage and if they are trustworthy and do a good job, use them regular and they will in turn look after you and not ripp you off. The MOT test is the same anywhere you go it is a Standard set of tests formulated by VOSA the government agency. by going to a flashy multi national company its not going to make you any safer or The test any better. In these hard times most people need to be carefull with their expenses and likewise the small businesses are suffering and they need the business. Find a local trustworthy garage and use them. Try the WHICH? website , they have a section you can subscribe to where other subscriber leave their feedback on local recommended companies in your area and they also leave negative reveiws for bad companies. As for the Tesco free MOT & Service , It confirms that there is no such thing as a free lunch hope this helps Summary: Be aware, find a good local garage

DO NOT DESERVE A SINGLE STAR

I would never go back to teso car insurance. Dont get me wrong, if youve never had to make a claim then no problem, but when u need them ur stuffed!!! i was fully comp, driving down the road when a stone flew up and cracked all my windscreen, i assumed with being fully comp, had buisness cover, and was also paying more for having a window tint on my windows (not my windscreen) that i would be covered. Oh no! apparently "your windows are not covered", autoglasss quoted me over £400 for a new windscreen. I devastated, unable to use my car for work due to the crack all down the windscreen, why oh why was i paying fully comp for nothing? i had to pay myself for the windscreen, but i didnt go to auto glass for that price, rip off!!! Then i was involved in a slight bump where another party bumped me, there was no damage to either car, accidents happen, so as far as i was concerned that was it. Oh no, the other party made a claim against me!?! saying i hit them, ect. I even had a witness to the bump, but oh no, this went on for over a year, in the end the claim was settled and i was found at fault!! they never even contacted the witness. i lost my no claims, sending my insurance through the roof, tesco paid out over £1000 to the other party. They were supposed to be there for me, backing my corner, that was why i was paying them, and they found me at fault in a bump where i was hit. Utterley disgusting, i have heard so many terrible encounters off other people who have also been less fortunate to experience tescos car insurance, how they get away with these things is beyond me. I am currently with admiral now, and so far they have been helpful and polite customer service, as yet i cannot complain. But PLEASE DO NOT USE TESCO, I CAN GUARANTEE THAT YOU WILL REGRET IT IF U R INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT.

I'm happy to pay more for a service as good as I received from tesco

I've been with tesco car insurance since I started driving in 2007 and I've had no problems with them at all. Every year my renewal comes through the post and it's always quite expensive but taking out a new policy online with them always seems to get the price to come down by a couple of hundred. Last year, around April, my car was broken into outside of my house. As soon as I realised (on my way to college) I phoned the police and got my crime reference number and then phoned tesco up. They were very helpful and arranged things very quickly. I was expecting it to take a week or two for things to get underway, but by 2pm on the same day, my car had been collected and taken away to be repaired and I had been contacted by the courtesy car company. Tesco were brilliant and at quite a stressful time they were able to calm me down. As for the stereo which was stolen, tesco issued me with around £200 store vouchers for halfords, to replace it. Although they were excellent when dealing with my claim, unfortunately this meant I had lost my no claims, and come time to renew, they wanted me to pay a rediculous amount of money. Luckily I managed to get it down to what I paid in my first year of driving, but as you can imagine, I was a little annoyed considering the damage was not my fault. However, this is just a minor issue as I would much rather be with an insurance company who can deal with something quickly and pay a bit more. As the no claims accumulate the price will go down.

Won't insure with Tesco again. Annoyed enough to be writing this review

Not worth one star. My wife was stationary at a roundabout when shunted from behind smashing the light and bumper. The other party involved contested this and today Tesco have informed me that after four months of their calls not being returned by the person involved they will close the file and I have to pay the garage's bill. When questioned how many times they had phoned the third party their reply was four, one call for each month!! I have had to call Tesco more times to chase them and each time the call was well over 10 minutes after having to wait a minimum of three minutes before speaking to a employee. As for the legal cover, this is an absolute waste of money and paper, as the cost of reclaiming the money compared to the cost of the repairs Tesco didn't consider enough so therefore aren't willing to chase the matter even though we're entitled to £50,000 worth of cover. In light of this I am now cancelling my contract and insuring with a different company. DO NOT INSURE WITH TESCO - THEY ONLY WANT YOUR MONEY!!!!

In short, terrible company and I would not recommend insuring anything with them

Despite Tesco's very competitive prices [the reason I was drawn to them in the first place], getting car insurance with them turned out to be an absolute waste of time: I am appalled with the way they have acted as an insurer. I was happily insured with Tesco for two years before I was involved in a rear shunt with a lorry on the motorway, from which I was lucky to walk away. My car had a catastrophic engine failure: the driver behind me did not leave enough space. Fair enough you think? No. At first Tesco said it was the third party's fault [as you would expect] and paid out for my written-off car. I asked them to inspect my vehicle for engine problems but all they did was inspect the brakes - NOT what I asked. A week or so later, Tesco decided I was at fault, crushed my car without a further inspection and didn't provide a decent explanation when I asked for a reason as to why I was now at fault. I found their solicitors [Lyons Davidson] to be unhelpful with a rather blasé attitude. They accused me of being an 'author of my own misfortune' [a phrase I found highly offensive considering what had happened]. Overall I felt I was being treated without the respect a consumer should be treated: with every piece of correspondence between myself, Tesco or their solicitors it appeared their attitude became more and more dismissive. I am now going through the Ombudsman as I am so dissatisfied with the service I received. In summary, only insure your car with this company if you're fairly certain you're never going to be in an accident.

        Get a quote

I have had my car insured by Tesco on their Tesco Value policy for 3 years now and definitely reccomend it. I first used it because it was the cheapest, although you have to et a quote direct on their website or on the phone, they aren't on the comparison websites. Yearly, when they send me the renewal quotes, I really do look around because money is really tight for me at the moment - but I am yet to find a cheaper quote that would make me awitch providers. That said - when I have tried to haggle more money off on the phone, Tesco haven't been able to do this. I am really a 'high risk driver' having not had my license that long and having a relatively sporty car and a boyfriend who is a named driver but I still think that my insurance is pretty cheap now - saying that I haven't ever had to claim. Being a value policy it is no frills. There is no legal or windscreen or anything like that cover and no RAC thrown in etc but I don't mind because I have it separately. Also I have never claimed so I can't tell you about that side of the insurer, but they do seem pretty good for me and touch wood- I will never have to claim! Also they offer named driver no claims build up where named drivers can earn no claims. This is good and helped my boyfriend to get a good value policy when he also joined Tesco (as they were cheapest for him with 2 year named driver no claims). Hope this helps some people!!

have been with for approx 8 years and will continue for the forseable future

I have had my car insurance through Tesco for approx 8 years now. I first took my policy throught them when they were the cheapest quote I could find on a comparison website. You can pay for the year ahead or monthly with a small interest charge, I also included Breakdown cover on mine which they include in your monthly premiums. I was only with Tesco for 2 years when I had an accident, they couldn't have been more helpful. It took one phone call and they did everything for me as I needed to be taken off in an ambulance, they arranged for a recovery truck to get my car and kept me notified throughout the whole procedure, I didn't have to call them chasing for updates once! They also helped me buy another car and put me in contact with JamJar cars who gave me advise on the next car I wanted, they were quoting the same price and VW so offered me an extra £150 to get a new stereo if I bought it through them! I was only 21 at the time so was worried that the claim was make my premium payments sky high so I was quite surprised when they only increased by £5 a month! I have never gone elsewhere for insurance as I had received such good service and help when I had my accident, they are one of the most competitive on price and provide fantastic customer service.
