Advantages: Cheapish, Friendly & Helpful Staff, Business For Free
Disadvantages: Unable to drive other cars
My car has been insured with Tesco Insurance for the past 3 years and i can say that it has by far been the cheapest insurer i have come across.
On the occassions i have spoken with customer services, i have always had a very helpful member of staff to talk to. One memorable conversation i had was about a month back. I moved into my mew house and contacted Tesco to inform them of my new address. It also happened to be my birthday later on in that week. When i was talking to the very friendly young lady on the phone, she wished me a happy birthday and asked what i had planned. Something small you may say, but it leaves you with a positive view of a company.
Lets talk policies. The usual things apply which i won't go into major detail with. Excesses are the same as anywhere else. You get a courtesy car if yours is off the road, though be careful to state that you want this when signing up as it isn't automatically given to you. Well it wasn't when i took out my policy. I think the extra cost is about £12 for this service which is worth doing for that price. One particular addition to policies which was of great use to me was that you are covered for business by default at no extra cost! This was great for myself as i need this to claim mileage at work. The vast majority of insurers don't give you this straight away and some charge for the priviledge if you require it. One thing you don't get though is third party cover on other people's vehicles. Not a major issue for me, but could be to others out there who have more than one car in a household for example.
Claims - I have unfortunately had my car broken into whilst i have been with Tesco, but they made the whole matter much easier. Last year, some lovely people screwdrivered a hole into my driverside door and stole my car stereo, amp, DAB unit, 2 mobile phones and a coat. Yes i know, you can say its my own fault leaving them in there but thats another issue. Besides they were all hidden. I contacted Tesco Insurance and report the damage and losses. Now being me, i thought this was going to be a real hassle trying to get the insurance to 'pay up'. However i was mistaken. The guy on the phone took a list of what had been stolen. The personal belongings (Phones, coat) was a doddle and i was sent £100 for them. Note this is the maximum they pay out for personal belongings. The car damage was sorted instantly. I was contacted by their garage within 5 minutes of the call ending! As for the audio equipment, all i had to do was produce my fax copies of my receipts to them and they would replace them no questions asked. The whole phonecall was under 10minutes. Lucky i had no claims protection as my renewal was the following week so i didn't have to pay anything more on my premium.
Thank you for reading the above and i hope you havent fallen asleep!
Summary: One of the friendliest, cheapest insurers around!
