Advantages: big complany and not our insurers
Disadvantages: see below
Having an old 2nd car in the family and using it mostly so that the other car does not knock up the miles we decided to only insure it third party fire and theft.
Well we had an accident. It was the other drivers fault entirely and she said as much.
This driver was insured with Tescos. We are with Churchill and it is a pity she wasnt insured with them as well.
Firstly Tescos would only pay out on our car not hers as she had admitted liability and apparently it is in the small print that that is the last thing you should do. She was insured with them fully comp and paying quite a lot as she was under 25.
As for getting our car sorted out with Tescos it has been a nightmare. We knew it would be a write off as well we only paid a couple hundred for it a couple of years ago and we were told that if to mend it costs more than 60% of the value of the car they will give you "the scrap" value of it.
Give them their due they were quick to come out for the car - mind you it could have been work for them.
Tescos were supposed to arrange a curtesy car but they didnt have one that day, or the next, or the next and no we never got one in the end.
When they told us that it would be a write off and they having agreed a price Tescos said they would get on to the garage to get them to bring the car back to us. When I rang to find out when, tescos answer was always we will get on to them and get back to you. They didnt. In the end I had to persuade them to give me the garage number for myself to ring them.
Bringing the car back took them 10 days and they brought it back on a trailer and we discovered it had a flat battery.
Tescos has not been at all helpful. I am glad it was the other person who was insured with her and not us as we definately would not swop over to them.
Summary: keep you ages on hold on the phone and difficult to get hold of.

- 12/07/06 As you are not insured with them you have only been able to write about one claim experience which is only part of what I would want to know when reviewing a product, ease of applying, quality of paperwork and service when policy is up for renewal are all things I would want to read about as a startin point and also details on cover and cost. |

- 10/07/06 although we were not insured with Tescos we had to deal with them because that is the way insurers work if you are 3rd party. we had to deal with tescos not Churchill. I can write about them as it was us who dealt with them |
