Well, I've just read some of the reviews on Tesco Car Insurance and have been really amazed by some of the negative statements made. Especially ones like "Tesco are stealing my money even though I no longer have a car". Car insurance is an annual commitment, you have to continue to pay for the full year you signed up for regardless of whether or not you stop needing it half way through! I don't think Tesco Car Insurance is the best thing since sliced bread but I do think people should give it a fair chance and read some of the reviews objectively despite this product having only a 2 star rating on Dooyoo!
We are a multi car household and for my works van I am insured with a specialist insurer. My daughter's car is the one we've registered with Tesco Car Insurance. I say "we" because what I really mean is "I". She twists her hair and gives me puppy dog eyes until I give in and get her sorted when it comes to anything remotely associated with her car.
The daughter's car only cost £400 and that was with a year's MOT so obviously, if it was stolen, it wouldn't be worth claiming for. In fact the excess for theft on most insurance policies starts at a sum above what her car is actually worth! So to be honest, when it came to renewing her insurance it was a case of it needing to be legally insured with no concern about ever wanting to claim from it or actually use it. The only thing I do always insist on is fully comprehensive with minimal legal cover though because that covers her in case she causes an accident.
I used a price comparison site to come up with the cheapest quotes around and Tesco were one of the four cheapest. They were one of only two that included legal support and then Tesco won out because it offered £40 in Tesco vouchers to spend on food or fuel with a policy. That made them the second cheapest overall taking the vouchers into account plus they ticked all the right boxes and had an easy to use application system.
All I needed to do was enter all of my daughter's details onto the screen and then get her to enter her card details. She was able to sign up for monthly payments for only about £20 more on the total annual price which I thought was quite reasonable and very helpful for her. The whole process only took five minutes and a week later, her documents came.
The only thing she had to do then was to send off her proof of no claims discount from her previous insurers. Three weeks later, the shopping vouchers arrived which she was able to use for petrol. The vouchers came in four £10 vouchers which was doubly handy as her tank only takes about £38 worth of petrol at a time!
Thankfully she has had no reason to claim from them yet (and hopefully never will). It's reassuring to know that she's got all the basic cover she might need though and she has information and policy booklets to hand if she needs any quick answers following any problems on the road. I think Tesco are definetely worth a try if you've got a low value vehicle you'd like to insure cheaply. I don't think I'd be happy to trust them with a mercedes because yes you do get what you pay for in this life but then if you drive a mercedes, you can afford a more expensive insurer!
Summary: Recommended.

- 14/09/08 I use these and they are really good. I called them earlier in the year to tell them that I was not going to continue with them as I had received a cheaper quote. Not only did they match the quote they sent me £50 vouchers. Cant complain. |
