Advantages: Cheap premiums
Disadvantages: Claims service, customer service - everything
I have had tesco car insurance for two years and have recently switched companies.
The premum is very good and they draw you in with special offers and promises of cheap premiums. However I find that this is all well and good until you put them to the test. Insurance is a promise to pay your claim and I feel tesco failed in this promise.
I had cover with them and someone reversed into me - ony causing a small dent but I didn't want to drive around with a scratched dented car. I reported the claim and went through to their out of hours line (4 days before christmas). They took the details and said someone would get back to me. I then had two further calls in 3 days and I had to give all the information again.
They said I would need to wait for the third party to admit liability before I could have my car repaired.
6 months later (despite chasing) I was no further along and they said that the third party was not responding so did I want to take them to court!!! Over £100 claim to repair my car - it wasn't worth taking the day off work!
As such I ended up closing the claim and still have a dent in my car. In my understanding of insurance (I work in the industry) I should have had my claim paid and they should have recovered it from the third part. However I have been penalised by their incompetance and now am at a deficit!! Seriously I paid them enough money and they didn't come through.
Their customer service is pretty terrible too - any correspondence takes about 7-10days to arrive, they charge for minor endorsements and the renewal notice was only sent to me 10 days before renewal date which didn't leave me much time to look elsewhere.
In retrospect you have to ask how much does a supermarket know about insurance - I know they outsource it. But I have not had a good experience and would not reccomend them to anyone - not if you want a claim to be paid!!
