Advantages: Efficient, and good value
Disadvantages: None known
As my car insurance is due for renewal in a couple of weeks, I decided (as usual) to have a hunt around to see if there were any better alternatives. My present insurers sent a letter about a month ago inviting me to ring and enquire what the renewal premium would be, but when I phoned they said it was too early as they could only give a quote within four weeks of the renewal date. One black mark! So I phoned again after a while (at my own local call expense) and after a lengthy review of my policy I was given a reasonable quote and a pleasant young man said it would be stored under my birth date so that when I called again it could be retrieved. He also said that when I got the official renewal notice, the figure it showed would be somewhat higher, but not to worry as the lower quote was valid. I considered changing my insurer but found most quotes were similar to the one I had been offered, so to keep life simple I decided to renew with my existing insurer. So I phoned again, and a pleasant young lady said the written quote was the one that applied, as their computer showed no record of my earlier (lower) quote. Black mark number two! What a bunch of monkeys! (Sorry, monkeys, I didn't mean to be insulting). Goodness knows what would happen if I ever had to make a claim. So I tried some of the much vaunted Internet companies. Some ask ridiculous irrelevant questions. Some won't quote, for strange arbitrary reasons. A well-known one makes you fill in several pages of complicated forms, only to tell you that the system is down when you try to get a quote. They could have told me that on the first page, not the fifth. A different tribe of monkeys. Then I tried Tesco. I do shop there and have a Clubcard, but it really isn't the first place you would think of going for car insurance. I must say their system is excellent. They ask only relevant questions and you can easily see how the various options affect the premium, as it is re-
calculated very quickly if you make a change in your requirements. You can also buy breakdown recovery if you want. The whole operation is very smooth compared with the competition, and I saved about forty per cent compared with my original policy, and about twenty per cent compared with other on-line quotes. Of course, as with any insurance, you don't know whether you have got a good policy until you have to make a claim, but I am optimistic. I thoroughly recommend that you check out Tesco if you need car insurance.

- 22/09/02 On invitation to renew I contacted another insurance co. who gave me a much better quote. I telephoned my original company with that quote and they suddenly found all sorts of discounts, before offering me another £70 cheaper than the renewal offer. I accepted it, of course, and the following year we were back where we started. So I ditched them. |

- 15/09/02 OK - I did not name names because I thought it inappropriate in the Tesco category. However, as you ask, existing company: Nissan, dead online: esure, and yes, I did get my Cubcard points! |
