Advantages: Cheap, No claims rewards, easy to do

Disadvantages: I could have saved an extra £1 with egg?

I decided it may be a good idea to write my report on Tescos car insurance as I go into my second year of being insured with them.

Last year whilst looking round for someone to insure my J reg Ford Fiesta 1.1 I came across Tesco. All the other insurance compaines either didn't want to know or we're looking to charge me around £1500-£2000 just for my little run around. Tesco however started off well by saying it would only cost £920 to insure me. After talking to some people they agreed it was a good deal but warned me that because Tesco were new to insurance that I should be careful. I checked everything over and it all seemed ok to I signed up as TPFT and as the second driver.

I had no problems in my first year with the car or my insurance so when the time came round to get it renewed I started to ring round again. Although the prices had come down from my first year, even as a TPFT and second driver the compaines were still looking for around the same as what I had paid for my first year at Tesco.

I then recieved my letter to ask if I wanted to renew with Tesco and the quoted price was £570 with 2 years no claims. This suprised me, no only because of the drop but because of the two years no claims. I rang up to check and they confirmed that this was correct and they were offering me that deal to keep my as a customer for another year. I mentioned the fact that egg were willing to match any offer plus knock £1 off, however they laughed this off saying that yes this may be true but staying with Tescos would allow me to keep building my no claims years up quicker and they would still be cheaper than everywhere else, plus egg might not do the same deal next year.

I was more than happy with this and so signed up straight away and hopefully I'll be able to make even more savings next year.

I'm 19. I tried Axa they couldn't get anywhere near the quote. It seems that where I live has something to do with it because I know people who have been quoted cheaper despite being the same age but when I try they stick the price right up which is a shame really.

My son (21/student/2 years' NCB) was quoted a sunstantially lower premium with another company (£312 compared with £460) on renewal.

His orginal company (17-to-40) agreed to 'match' this lower premium, but he decided that the new company (Axa) had done enough to gain his custom (for at least a year!).

You really do have to 'shop around'.

Ins urers are generally a loada weasels !

I am assuming you are very young to pay that amount for TPFT. My FC is much below that. Tesco were right that "offers" are generally just for the new customer's year. I always do a deal on my car insurance, but then the renewal is back to normal the following year. Then another deal....ad infinitum. :-)
