Advantages: A very secure padlock.
Disadvantages: Not a lot.
These Abus padlocks are one of the most secure padlocks you can buy, for high security requirements, with a shackle made of hardened special steel. The design makes them very secure, and the fact that they are made from stainless steel, makes them rust free.
They have a stainless steel internal mechanism, which make them also suitable for use in outdoor conditions. A special key guard helps to keep water and dirt from entering the mechanism itself.
Another feature which makes this a superior option, is the reinforced plate within the body, which prevents the lock body from being cut or force attacked.
Although disc padlocks like these are a great security option for any situation, it is recommend that this product is used with a decent hasp and staple, for maximum security. The lock of course only being as strong as the fittings, and also the frame it is fixed to. This cover shields the shackle completely, making bolt cutter and saw attacks much more difficult.
All of these padlocks are usually supplied with 2 keys included in the price. If you require several padlock which are "Keyed alike" Meaning they all can be opened with the same key, then these are available too.
Sizes:-
There are basically three different sizes of the Diskus padlock, 70, 80, and 90mm. Select the biggest you can.
Technology:-
A precision 5 pin tumbler, with self-locking mechanism, makes the padlock highly secure against being picked, whilst the hardened steel shackle and double bolted case help protect the lock from force attacks. The non-corrosive internal mechanism also ensures the lock will function well outdoors.
Many moons ago, I was a Fireman, (Surprise) and we used to simply snip padlocks with a pair of bolt croppers, However, when these types came onto the market, we had problems, and the old boltcroppers were replaced with a special type of angle grinder, proving how effective they are.
These are available at most DIY Superstores and many other places besides, I will not name prices, but you do get what you pay for, and I would recommend going for the genuine Discus make.
No matter what padlock you have, it will still require an occasional squirt of oil to keep the mechanism free.
Abus have a website, although not a co.uk one, see here:- http://www.abus.de/us/
Summary: Very good quality.

- 05/02/09 Ah that title took me back! I used to see a fella that was a bit cloney, and he's go out on a Saturday night with one of these round his neck. I think he thought he looked hard (which he did) but it did piss him off when the first time I saw it, I asked him where his bike was. Snigger. |
