Advantages: Pillions feel safer, More comfortable for rider, too, Wife still talking to me

Disadvantages: Bit expensive, Just the price, Wife still talking to me

Some products are so blindingly obvious, and the need is so great, you often marvel at your own stupidity in not doing something about it before.

One such motorcycle accessory is the Pillion Pal. This is simply a webbing belt with large rubber handles covering your own love handles. Put it round your waist, click the buckle fastener (similar to rucksack fasteners) adjust to size and ask the pillion to hang on tight. The handles are big enough to accommodate any size of pillion gloves and the rubber coating is very easy on the hands.

Previous to using this simple product, my wife had to artificially dislocate her shoulder (like Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon) to reach for the pillion grab rails on my bikes or try and grab my slippery leather jacket with her tiny hands.

Acceleration and deceleration were respectively met with knees in my armpits or a clunk as her helmet connected with mine. Smooth riding or not, it was still uncomfortable for her.

Overnight this disappeared. My wife now had her own set of reins to hang on to. Manic acceleration? She is still hanging on but this time laughing like a lunatic! Last minute braker? All you feel is a gentle shove against your midriff and no headbutting.

The cost is £20, which may seem expensive but it is cheaper than the petrol you would waste retracing your steps looking for your pillion after that spirited take off at the traffic lights.

Most bike shops sell them or buy it from one of the big mail order companies.

Wish I had bought one years ago. I keep thinking of all those lost girlfriends, trying to thumb their way home after being ejected James Bond style!

I can see them being useful in supermarkets as baby reins for husbands. It would stop them wandering off and becoming lost in the alcohol section.
