Advantages: Handles like a dream, great power from a 250, very good for the track.
Disadvantages: Big fuel burner, need to to pup the 2 stroke oil every 3 or so tanks, expensive to maintain
I originaly purchased my 2001 RS250 as a first bike to get the hang of riding something somewhat powerful. 5 Years and 1 rebuild down the track, you guessed it.
I simply can't part from this awsome machine, I have attempted to sell it 3 times, and everytime I find myself retracting the sale.
From the second you start the RS250, you smell that 2 stroke and get an automatic sense just how much power this thing produces for its size. Thepowerful Brembo front / rear brakes, the high quality swing arm, the race bred tacho and digital speedo really make you feel like getting on the track.
Spare parts are I admit expensive, but as most Aprilia RS250 owners know to well, Suzuki engine parts are "Identical" to RS250's so plenty of parts there at a good price.
Comfort is not an issue for me, I have covered 500km trips tagging along with bigger bikes and I was no less comfortable than anyone else riding a sports bike. Your feet get kinda numb from the vibrations of the 2-stroker but easy fix, pull over and rest.
If your looking for an economic bike to take you from home-work, please look at buying something else. RS250's are not economic nor were they designed with that aspect in mind. They are race replicas mostly used by amature races stepping up to bigger race bikes (track).
Once you start experimenting with corners etc you will get quite bored riding if you do alot of freeway travel as these bikes crave corners.
Power is not an issue, theres nothing like hearing this thing crawl up the revs in a few seconds your hitting 10000rpm and popping into second. Time this right and in 1st you will have the front wheel in the air going past motorist. From memory Power band hits in 2 stages, Stage 1 is around 7000 and Stage 2 around 9000 rpm. I have put a few big bikes to shame including GSX-Rs 1000 powerhouse (0-140km, hands down).
Hope this convinces you to grab one of these little pocket rockets, Aprilia isnt making them anymore so grab one while you can.
Summary: Excellent all rounder for road based riding and track based. Expensive to maintain
