I have now had my RS50 for about a year, and use it regularly in summer months. It's a great way to get out onto the road and earn a bit of independence even when you do not have a car.

The bike simply looks fantastic, it doesn't sound great, but that is because of the engine size and the tiny engine, but to have in the garage and to parade to your mates, it is simply wonderful. It is also a great starter bike if you plan on upgrading to something a bit more poky in the future. It gives you a great feel of the balance and speed that a motorbike can give you. I have ridden a few other things, of the road obviously, since buying this and it has certainly made me much more confident about stepping up to something a bit more special in the future. The one negative is that the price is fairly steep, but for the fun you are getting, it has to be worth it, in my opinion.
The cost of rebuilding the bike is very cheap so if you broke anything it's also very easy to fix. I have rebuild two of them one aged 1998 where i still got around 600 for it and my new one i have been working on it 2006 and i would never sell the new one. Great bike for learners of any kind
The Aprilia RS50 Motorbike is the stuff of a 16 year olds dreams. It has the look and performance of a proper sports bike.
The Aprilia RS50 has 6hp and can be ridden by anyone aged 16 or older who has passed their CBT in the last 2 years or who is in possession of a full motorcycle license. It is started electrically and has 6 gears. Being of european origin the speedo and milometer are both in Kilometers.

Depending on how new an RS50 you want prices can range from £3500 for a brand new one to less than £400 for one that is more than 10 years old. Again this could change depending on how well looked after they are. Mine was bought 2 years ago and was a 2000 reg which I picked up for around £1000. Overall it was in fairly good condition when I got it just a few scrapes.

For a 50cc engine I must say the performance is pretty good, if you have it de-restricted then the top speed that you will reach is approximately 70 mph. NOTE: If you are only riding this on a CBT then it must be restricted to 30mph, riding it faster that is illegal and can result in you having your bike taken from you and you could lose your license.
==== Running Cost ====
The running costs for these is relatively low, my first year insurance premium came to roughly £350 for third part fire and theft cover. Tax for the bike is a lowly £21 which is great, this is due to the small engine size and low co2 output. The fuel economy is great and filling the tank costs about £7.50 depending on how high you rev it will dictate how long the fuel will last but you will still get pretty good milage.

Overall reliability is average, I did have quite a few problems with mine but for the most part it was good, parts are relatively cheap but aren't THAT cheap, you will have to pay a bit for labour.

Overall if you are after a sporty number that has the looks then the RS 50 is for you, I find they look so much nicer than the generic scooters that you see whizzing around, having one of these made me the envy of my school!

The apprilla rs 50 is a very good looking bike, i have heads turning all the time as i ride around the town, not surprisingly tho as it has a arrow race can and sounds amazing, it has been mistaken by riders at bike meetings as being a 125 and even a 250, when brought standerd/derestricted is very very reliable and does about 60mph as it redlines in top gear. Once you start chasing performance, the bike stops bein reliable, my bike is for fun not transport and has a 80cc kit, 24mm carb, race reed valves, race crank, race bearings and race exhaust, it is very very fast and does about 80mph at the redline, however breaks down every week or so. if you want a fast fun bike the rs50 is a great way to start bikeing, and is really good relaible bike for comuting, however if you want a very fast bike do not buy, once tuned becomes very very unreliable! I have pirelli mt75 tires, and the bike easily goes into corners at 50mph + in the dry and 40mph in the wet!
The aprilia rs50 is a fantastic looking bike, i bought the repsol replica about 4 months ago and the year is 2003
due to the plastic gear box i hear they have the gears jump around a little and when throtteling it it pops into neutral (not often) and redlines it until you change gear properly and you got to hope it stays there!!
since i had the bike i found the gearbox is a main problem as it now crunches up and down the gears and will cost a lot to get a new one!! if it was working i would be out on it now as it is such a head turner it feels good to be the owner
the gearbox and speedo are the only problems ive had and the speedo was more than likely due to the age of the bike!! the extremely large fairing on th bike restricts easy access to fix such minor fixes like adding gearbox oil etc or new bulbs on indicators
APART from that the bike is a great runner the engine performs better on the best oil.....(if u want cheap stuff it will cost more in the long run to get a new engine)
my freinds have reiju's and motorhispanias and the reiju is quicker than mine but only 5 mph quicker top end and his has a race exhaust and mine is only de-restricted
it currently does 70mph just de-restricted which is awesome for a young rider who is confident but bored on a moped....one thing i dislike is the sound which is actually like a tin can rattling down a road....the reijus and motorhispanias both have more "beefy" sounds to them!!
i admit its like a sticker show but thats how the pro's have them with sponsors in moto gp etc...unti i heard it go i would never beleive it was a 50
i have had my aprilia rs50 for about 5 months now and its the best bike any1 could ever get, its amazing handleing and great acceleration and fun fast high top speed. i have a 2000 reg rs50, it has the full redbull graphics and i have had 85mph out of it, it have 80cc big bore kit, 21mm uprated carb, full carbon fibre arrow exhaust system, race crankshaft, and i have just had the engine race tuned, i would recomend one of these bikes to any one. if anyone can help me and give me some more idears what i could do to my bike, ect uprated clutch or anything, please email me on, email@example.com. or leave me a comment, thanks any help will be great thanks matt
I've had my RS 50 for about a month now and I'm fairly pleased. The obvious reason for this being that its fast for a 50cc, allowing u to smoke your friends on scooters easily. Mine is de-restricted, as it should be, and can almost keep up with the flow of traffic on a main road. However those who claim "the Rs50 is capable of doing 75+ mph" are talking rubbish. The bike redlines at just under 60mph and is definetlay not capable of 75+ when standard. It does sit quite nicely at about 50-55 though. I hope to get a race can to improve performance a little though. Acceleration is as expected....not so good, with the RS 50 having no grunt until it reaches around 6,500rpm. Saying that, it is much better than any other 50 around.
One thing that should be critised is the gears. When going along in 6th, the Rs50 has a nasty habit of dropping out of gear into neutral. Why it does this (even from brand new, like mine) I dont know.
All in all I love this bike though. Quick, fun, economic and better than a scoot, it ticks most of the boxes.
i bought my Aprilia RS50 1999 model the other. At first it wasnt running but i replaced the spark plug, charged the battery and sorted out the choke. I was amazed at first with the sound, wow when you get it up to like 8000 revs it sounds awesome(with out a race can). Ive only road in my back yard as im only 15 but even my Dad says the acceleration is surprising. It even would stand a chance against my old bike(GSX 550, that i used to mess around on). My bike still needs alot of work just mainly tidying it up and respraying bits. Cant wait until i put on a race can,malossi air filter and maybe even the 70cc big bore kit(not sure on that one yet). Also i would suggest this for the taller 16year olds as the bike is nearly as tall as a ZZR1100. would definately recommend this bike 10/10 ace...any questions e-mail me or add me on msn firstname.lastname@example.org
i have just got my rs 50 2005 model now and i am getting a new exhaust + derestriction fitted aswell.. but the people at the servicing garage say it could only reach speeds of up to 55 mph tops+!! why is it only going at this speed when i hear people saying their bikes can reach 70-75 tops derestricted !!??? somebody help me please:@ if anyone could email me and tell me how i can get the speed up it would be appreciated!! my email address is email@example.com
I am 16 and come from Lincoln, in early Febuary i brought a second hand Aprilia RS 50 Extrema 1994, it was an import from Italy. When i first brought the bike it was de-restricted, had a problem of jumping out of 3rd gear and sometimes wouldnt go in at all. It also had all the cosmetic damage you would expect from an 11year old bike. My dad being a merchanic sorted out the problems with the bike and also touched up the paint work. Was then a good looking bike. Then when i turned 16 in early March i riden the bike back from my farthers to Lincoln, (he lives in chesterfield) which is about 55 miles away, rather far for a first ride. lol. After a week of having my bike on the road my dad went away to Florida and i came off my bike. I was doing about 30 mph when landing in a field, i still dont really know what happened. Well after that i had to sort everything out on my bike myself, bent gear selector, bust indacators, bent top fairing, and a bit of tlc on the paint work. Well then it was back on the road and developed a problem with the exhaust, it was blowing, so it wouldnt go as fast :(. Well this wasnt bothering me as much as it was still going. So the bike was fine for a while apart from the annoying thing of nuts and bolts forever dropping off. At one point i was riding with half the fairing hanging off!!! And to top things off on this bike, this moring on the way to school the bike wouldnt go into 4th gear... weird as it was fine last night, so i pulled over and told my mate and he said to try again. So i did. BAD IDEA. When i tried again the bike still wouldnt go into 4th and resulted in me being thrown to a halt and some very loud and wierd noises! Clank Bang etc. My gear box is now sat in bit at the bottom of my engine. My review of the rs 50 extrema i that it is a very good bike and great looking, just make sure that u carry a screw driver with you, and some spare screw when your ride cos of things dropping off! You also need a continous amount of funding
When i got my RS50 a few weeks ago my mates didnt believe i was 16! With 70mph on the clock and easily reaching 60 it is definately the best 50cc around. I burnt a scooter going up a steep hill! For a second hand 2001 model I couldn't believe the performance. I was reading another review and yeh my gears slip too sometimes. Also the peg for the gears gets stuck but i think thats because I'm to keen to change gear and speed off that I push my foot up with too much force. But apart from that no problems. I suggest anyone else with an RS start it (with choke) and leave it running for about 5-10 mins (so long as its not at the side of the road, u dont want it gettin robbed!) Ive recently fitted my own sound system to it! I got some PC speakers, cut the wire to the power supply and wired it to my battery, plugged my speakers in and MP3 player and bobs ure uncle! I can hear it perfectly through my helmet, coz its so bloody loud! If you dont no much about electronics then i wouldn't do it your self. Make sure your PC speakers are decent before you take them apart and dont take a high voltage coz then ur battery'l go flat. Also dont leave your speakers wired up to the battery while your not riding (like over nite) coz that'l drink your battery. Consider buying a new battery to power them and have that under your rear seat. As to wear you'l put your speakers I'l leave to you, but make sure they are secure coz mine fell off while i was riding once! Not good. Im getting neons soon! 2x12" for about a 10er!. But yeh, amazing bike, real head turner!
I brought my 2002 RS50 about a year ago privately for £1500. It was in excellent condition and looks superb - without a doubt the best 50cc bike money can buy. It already had a performance exhaust and air filter fitted and can reach about 65mph. Before I got the bike people told me Aprilia's are unreliable but I use mine daily and I've never had any problems with it apart from wear and tear items like a couple of spark plugs and a new rear tyre (which cost £70!). I make sure I warm the bike up before thrashing it and treat it mainly as a 45mph not a 65mph bike as you only wear the engine quicker than normal and blow it up or and need an engine rebuild. I notice using petrol from supermarkets is crap and effects performance - I use normal Shell unleaded and Putoline 2-stroke Oil which costs about £11 per litre but is defiantly worth it as you really notice better performance. The only complaints I've had is there is no fuel gauge so you really have to know how much fuel you get from a tank (I reckon about 250km and 50km from the reserve) and the chain needs tightening often to avoid sloppy gearchanges. In windy weather and cold weather its not very nice - it feels slow but when the weather is nice its great fun and feels fast its looks superb and gets attention wherever I go. The only other problem I have is carb freezing which happens when its really cold because of the performance air filter fitted. If your buying second-hand make sure you get one thats been looked after and has less than 15000 miles on the clock as by then the engine is usually knackered and needs rebuilding or buy one which had recently had a rebuild like mine had. Best to have a performance exhaust fitted as the standard can restricts the engine and causes problems as it is inefficient and obviously with the performance one you get an increase in power which means more fun!
I have had mine now for a month and LOVE it! It has the 80cc kit in it and the Arrow exchust.The break in period is about 300 miles before you feel comfortable going approx.65mph.It handles curves very nicely and you have to be alittle bit on top of the bars when going through turns at high speed,as far as body language goes.You can either "knee" drag or not.This bike is a blast to ride and folks don't know what it is as far as CC's.Get's a lot of looks and smiles! You can do a lot to this bike also.Good on gas...just carry a small bottle/can of oil under rear seat....Have fun!
My new Aprilia RS50 (the Repsol Race Replica version) was delivered last week. First impressions on riding it (it's still restricted) was that it is one hell of a lot faster than I had ever expected. I was expecting a bike that would struggle to reach 33mph. The fact was that after a few miles were under it's belt, it was reaching 45mph quickly and easily and there was still plenty in reserve. The bike really and truly looks the part. It has a proper race frame, and everything about it screams that this is a race bike with a small engine, and not the sports moped of the kind that I'd seen while looking for a small bike to buy for my son who will soon be 16. I'd seen the Derbi, the Rieju, and the Motorhispania, and they're all attractive bikes. But the Aprilia is the best assembled, the best looking and really stands head and shoulders above the rest. All the controls are logical and intuitive to use. The instrumentation (rev counter, speedometer and coolant temperature gauge) is classy. There are warning lights for indicators, low two-stroke oil level, high and low beams and neutral. The Repsol race replica fairings on this version are a bit garish but attractive nevertheless. And they're also highly visible, so although a bit "in your face", you're going to be seen by other motorists which ain't a bad thing. The fact it only has a side stand could be considered a slight disadvantage. It also has no fuel gauge or low fuel warning light which might be irritating. The odometer and trip meter are in kilometers but there are both kph and mph markings on the speedo. As it is run in, I don't doubt it will become smoother and faster. Derestricted, it will become a monster of a 50cc bike. If you're 16 and want something that is a bit special, then this is the bike for you.
