Don't buy it in Yellow!!!

Advantages: Looks, sound, speed, handling, name
The Ducati 900SS injection is the latest evolutionary version of this machine. It looks drop dead gorgeous, but must be in red!! To purchase any other colour is akin to buying a British Racing green Ferrari, you will also not be able to sell it on without an even bigger residual loss. The marque will often affectionately be referred to as ‘The Duke.’ The Ducati mark has excelled in World bike racing over the last few years and I’m sure sells a large number of machines because of this
New, you can purchase the machine for £7000ish, import and save at least a grand, or by second hand. Yhis latest model came out two years ago and you will have no problem finding a mint low mileage example for £4000ish.
I have driven numerous big bikes for over twenty years and seen colossal advances since my first large bike (Norton Commando MIII). Modern machines are generally much faster, handle better, are more reliable, have efficient brakes yet lose value at an alarming rate, largely because models are being constantly improved and updated – people seem to chase the latest model, not only because it may be better but also as a fashion statement, leaving piles of nearly new, low mileage machines on forecourts and garages that really can be bought at a fraction of new price. Another factor for the alarming depreciation is, like cars, the disparity of prices –Imports are a lot cheaper.
The SS has not moved with the times. The build quality and finish is not good enough. I had no major problems in over twelve months and 5000 miles, although a couple of small noises were worrying! My machine would not engage neutral. The worst feature is the automatically retracting side stand that doesn’t hang the bike low enough and doesn’t want to stay down. I still miss centre stands on any bike.
The performance is adequate but nowhere near the latest bikes from Japan and Great Britain (Yes, Triumph is a bike
manufacturer that produces top bikes to be proud of) however for normal road use the machine is more than fast enough, it handles very precisely and feels much smaller than its actual size. The machine is certainly no tourer; my wrists ached after only half an hour on the seat.
I must be a poseur because I have to admit - a large reason I purchased The Duke was not only the looks, but also the name and noise – and what a beautifully distinct noise the V-engine Ducatis make - the only modern mass-produced bike with a sound of its own. (Harleys can’t be classed as modern.)
Out of all the bikes I have driven and owned I enjoyed the Duke the most.
