Advantages: Fun commuter

Disadvantages: Slow without mods

This is a baby bike that uses premium parts. Make it better by fitting parts from the Ducati Performance catalogue. Or buy a used 748.

But it's a great entry-level Duc, and can be bought at bargain prices. Provided you do some basic stuff once bought - race cans, decent plugs and leads, Splitfires,K&N, Scottoiler...loads of WD40 on the switchgear...you'll be fine.

BHP is pretty disgraceful compared to modern Jap 600s, but the old desmo twin is extremely tunable, and with the right attention to detail, you'll be able to turn it into an evil little streetfighter, capable of scaring old ladies everywhere.

I wouldn't recommend it to novices or anyone without a full set of tools, but if you're looking for a design classic which will deliver top laughs, and you like a bit of spannering - the M600 Dark is great.

If you want reliable, powerful & fun off the shef, get a Yam Fazer. But you won't impress anyone...

Whimper-whimper......My dream bike!!!!

Thanks for the op, full of useful and realistic tips. I get annoyed when people write ops that are basically just "I love my bike, it's fast and stuff". I doubt I'll ever own one of these, but at least I can dream realistically now, with all of your top info!!

Incidentally, how do you reckon it'd rate as a chick's bike? Ie, would I be able to lift it??

= )
