From the moment I laid eyes on this bike, back in 1998 I had to have it. I was already a Harley owner, but my trusty 1993 Sportster wasn't a patch on this beast. With it's blacked out engine, drag bars, syuper low seat, forward controls and big black tank, the Night Train was to my eyes, the most beautiful stock Harley I'd ever seen. It was customised right out of the shop.

I tried to buy one in 1999, but when Harley announced the new 1450cc Big V Twin engine, I knew I had to wait until they squeezed the new block into the Night Train frame, which they duly did for the 2000 model year. What a way to end the millenium!!!

The best way to decide if you want one of these bikes is too look at one. If it fills you immmediately with an overwhelming longing that no amount of maths or reason will disuade, then it's the bike for you. To go into the details of horsepower, road holding, handling or fuel economy would be pointless. If you want one, you want one! And if you want one, you just gotta have one!

It's not the fastest bike in the world, in fact, it's not fast at all. But then, lets be realistic, it's a bike it'll beat all but a handful of supercars to 60.

It's not the most economical bike in the world. But hell, if that's what you're bothered about, buy a scooter!

It doesn't handle like a Jap bike. But then, if you wanted a jap bike, you wouldn't be reading this.

It does what it says on the tin. It makes you a Harley rider. Wherever you go, you'll have friends who understand the unique appeal of these bikes. Whenever you ride it, you'll have a smile on your face. Whenever you look at it, your chest'll swell with pride.

But this (like many of the 2000 model year) is a new kind of Harley. More reliable, more sophisticated, better behaved and better performing than any that have gone before. It's even got technology, counter rotating balancer
shafts reduce the shimmy that Harley were one famous for, making riding, particularly at higher speeds, a much more pleasant experience. The electrics are better too, if I didn''t ride my 1993 SPortster every couple of weeks, I was looking at a flat battery. You can leave the Night Train unridden for months on end, and it starts first time.

Out of the box, the sound is not particularly inspiring, the throaty roar, and potato-potato idle that Hogs are famous for just isn't there. But at your first service, get the bike Stage 1 tunes, and some noisier pipes fitted, then... just ride!

This bike is an American legend, but it's also practical, comfortable and desirable.
