Advantages: Price, Performance, Comfort
Disadvantages: Finish, Insurance costs, Pillion grips
I bought my ZX6R G1 after test riding a brand new Yamaha R6. I was disappointed by the R6's lack of slow speed manoeuvrabilty, a fault that I found almost immediately after trying to pull up to a petrol pump. I bet they've kept the CCTV footage for future mailing to Lisa Riley! A used ZXR6R is a bargain at the moment. It has been overshadowed by the R6 and GSXR600. This makes for good discounts on virtually new, dry use only bikes that will almost certainly come with top whack alarms and full service history. Most importantly, this bike is still the dogs; more rider friendly and spot on for covering large distances in relative comfort. Sounds too good doesn't it? You're right. Paint finish is poor. I needed a tank respray after the buckle on my rucksack tore into the paintwork. This is the same rucksack i've used on my previous sports bikes. Gutted ain't the word. I'd only had the bike a day! Also keep an eye on the rear panels which are easily marked by pillion riders. I've left the bike as standard. My mate has fitted a Yoshimura race can to his R6 and has since been attracting much attention from the boys in blue. This is not helped by the small numberplate with the phrase '70 U must be joking!' emblazoned upon it! Shop around for insurance quotes. Sounds obvious but so many owners don't. I found the best quote on the net with a well known insurer; although I confirmed the details by phone before parting with my hard earned. Quotes vary by as much as £450. All in all a top sports bike. My only other gripe is the lack of a fuel gauge. This has caused more than one scary moment. You don't want to be caught out on the motorway with a bike spluttering for juice. You need to be a contortionist to reach the fuel tap whilst on the move. Enjoy riding whatever you ride. Martin.

- 25/09/01 Good opinion about a pretty good bike. Got any good ideas where I can get competitively priced leathers and/or textiled bike clothing?
I have tried a couple of websites but still undecided. |
