Advantages: reliable economical

Disadvantages: slow until derestricted

As my youngests 16th birthday approached he began to drop serious hints about getting a moped to runaround on, I suppose I should have been expecting it, his sister is hooked on two wheels and he has already rode a Gas Gas trial bike off road.

Anyway, just as we were about to give up finding the right bike we found an immaculate mint second hand Aerox (3 months old )and it was love at first sight.

The Aerox is quite a sporty looking little scooter, it has all of the usual modern scooter qualities, automatic transmission, brake levers on the handle bars but at the same time it is a sophisticated package.

It is liquid cooled and has disk brakes front and rear, the dash is partly standard and partly LCD display and it has WIDE low profile tyres but the main reason it was irresistable to him is that it looks the part ...it is bright red and comes ithe loads of stickers , his is a Max Biaggi race replica but you can also get a Virgin replica.

What you should know is that whatever the colour or however many stickers when you first get it it will be really really slow, unlike many of the Italian and Spanish bikes that take about thirty seconds to de restrict this is a completley different kettle of fish.

The Aerox engine is actually restricted in three places 1. at the exaust 2. at the variator 3. at the RCD unit

Full derestriction is not always an easy process and if you are not sure about it I reccomend getting the dealer to do it for you, (normally at the first service and costs around £50 extra) just tell them you want it fully derestricted otherwise they won't do the electronic chip contoller and no matter what you do to it the revs will be limited and it will never go over 45 mph.

Stephens is now completely as Mr Yamaha intended and the difference is stunning, I wont make any daft claims as to its speed but lets just say that it doesn't get overtaken much and it shows 'off the clock' o
n the speedo (60
mph).

It is still 100% reliable and has not been any trouble at all since we have had it, my only critisism is the noise from the exhaust, and the fact that I think it is really uncomfortable but he seems to love it !!

Importantly, in the scooter stakes none of his mates have anything that is quicker so there you have it ..the Yamaha Aerox ...

.. oh yes MBK make exactly the same bike, in fact yamaha buy all their mopeds off MBK then stick their own badges on them and charge about three hundred quid extra so if you want one of these sporty mopeds shop around for the best deal, there's loads of choice and enjoy some safe happy riding

15 Sept 2001... well there has been a few problems with the Yam ..I have to say that they have largley been due to rider abuse but you should be aware of the following ......... if you constantly 'stunt ride' this scooter particularly rolling stoppies then you will damage the headset.. £75 please, if you 'high side' it on an island and have to replace most of the plastic then thats £300 and if your brake master cylinder fails thats another sixty pounds, if your rear wheel drops down a hole in the road then it is liable to crack the aluminium and that is another seventy five pounds plus tyre !!!! ..new modifications have been a better exhaust system and uprated clutch rollers resulting in really nice acceleration and no loss of power up hills etc.... oh and I can't praise Rukka protective clothing enough because without it things would have been much worse ....not just fractured wrist and elbow !! see ya

January 2003 ... I can hardly believe it but we still have this scooter ....Stephen is now 18 and has a car but he will not part with the Yam .. he abuses it regularly, wheelies, stoppies, jumps .. you name it (photos available for anyone who thinks its impossible to wheelie a 50cc auto) and through all this the engine has never
missed a beat .. obviously it may self destruct tomorrow now I have wrote this but even if it does then this ped has been / is fantasticly reliable.
